  Steven Kwan reached base for the second time in two plate appearances, hitting a single to lead off the bottom of the third. He made a steal and advanced to second base.

  Luis Gill got Kyle Manzardo to fly out to right field and Jose Ramirez to pop up to second base. But Josh Naylor hit a slap shot to left field that drove in Cowan and cut the Yankees' lead to 3-2.

  Lewis Gill threw a scoreless bottom of the 2nd

  Brian Rocheo hit a fly ball over the left-field wall, but it was caught by Alex Verdugo for the third out of the third inning.

  Lewis Gill walked Austin Hedges but retired the next three batters he faced. Daniel Snyman grounded out to second base, then Andres Gimenez flied out to center.

  Austin Wells goes deep

  Austin Wells' solo home run gives the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

  Gavin Williams looked like he was settling in after dismissing Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe. But then he grooved a fastball down the middle of the strike zone, and Wells didn't miss it.

  Wells' first homer was back on September 9.

  Flip-flopping Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton to the No. 4 and 5 spots in the lineup is a curious move. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that he did this to balance left- and right-handed batters in the middle and bottom of the Yankees batting order.

  Why Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the cleanup instead of Giancarlo Stanton?

  Will the Yankees use closer Luke Weaver tonight?

  Yankees closer Luke Weaver blew the save in Thursday's Game 3, allowing two runs on two hits (including a home run) in 1 1/3 innings.

  It was Weaver's third appearance in the series, which included a five-out save in Game 1. After Thursday's performance, it was a question of whether Weaver was fatigued from a heavy postseason workload.

  Luke Weaver and Clay Holmes pitched in three of the four days. Boone said he could use “some” relievers in four of the five, but could not say which.
