Former One Direction band member Liam Payne died on Wednesday at the age of 31 after falling from the third floor of the Palermo Hotel in Casasur, Buenos Aires, Argentina, police said. The exact circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.

Here's what we know:

On Wednesday, hotel staff requested emergency police assistance shortly before Payne fell, according to an emergency call obtained by CNN's local affiliate Todo Noticias.

Police said in a statement later that day that staff rushed to the hotel shortly after 5pm local time in response to an emergency call warning of an “aggressive person who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol”.

“We have a guest who is high on drugs and alcohol,” the front desk manager said on the call. “He breaks things. He's tearing up the whole room.”

The manager said they needed “someone to be sent to us urgently,” because the staff didn't know “if the guest's life was in danger.”

Hotel staff could not enter the room, where the guest had been “for two or three days,” the manager said in the call.

Here's what we know so far about Liam Payne's death

On Thursday, Argentina's public prosecutor's office said in a statement that it was investigating Penn's case and that “everything indicates that the musician was alone at the time of the fall and was experiencing some sort of episode due to substance abuse.”

On Wednesday, Buenos Aires police said in a statement to The Associated Press that Payne “jumped from the balcony of his house,” without elaborating on how that conclusion was reached or whether the jump was intentional.

When reached by CNN on Thursday, Buenos Aires police communications director Pablo Policicchio declined to clarify the statement to the AP and referred CNN to the prosecutor's office for more information.

The public prosecutor's report said Payne's injuries indicated she was not fully conscious when she fell. “Given the position in which the body was found and the injuries sustained from the fall, it is presumed that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and may have been semi- or fully unconscious,” it read.

The public prosecutor's report added that multiple substances were seized from Penn's Buenos Aires hotel room that “could indicate a pre-existing condition of alcohol and drug use.”

Photos of Payne's hotel room, released by Buenos Aires police, show a broken television.

As the investigation continues, the prosecutor's office said five witness statements have been taken to reconstruct what happened in the hours before Penn's death. The prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Marcelo Roma, confirmed that the preliminary autopsy report determined that Payne died of “polytrauma” or multiple severe injuries and “internal and external bleeding” as a result of the fall. Authorities are conducting an autopsy.

In recent years, Payne has spoken publicly about his struggles with mental health and substance abuse.

He reflected on the recurring feelings of loneliness on the 2019 Sky show “Ant Middleton and Liam Payne: Straight Talking”: “There comes a time where the level of loneliness and people get into you every day… Every time, you're like, when is it going to end? ?”

“It almost killed me a few times,” he added.

Payne said in 2021 about dealing with alcoholism on “The Diary of a CEO” podcast, “It was a problem” and that it had a “really, really serious” side.

“It seems to me when we were in the band, the best way to protect us because of how big it was was to lock us in the room. And, of course, what's in the room? minibar. So at a certain point I thought, OK, I'm going to have a party for one – and that's going to continue for many years of my life,” he added.

“It's wild, but it was the only way to get out of the depression during the day,” he said.

Payne was born on August 29, 1993, in the English city of Wolverhampton and studied music technology at City of Wolverhampton College.

He was still living in the area when he rose to fame on the British TV competition show “The X Factor”. He first appeared on the show as a 14-year-old in 2008, returning for a second audition two years later on Simon Cowell's advice.

He captured the hearts of young fans with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson when they all came together on the show to form One Direction.

Since they've amassed a worldwide fanbase of “Directioners,” the beloved boy band has had the first of four albums debut on the Billboard 200. Also nicknamed 1D, the group sold more than 70 million records worldwide before disbanding in 2016.

The band was known for songs like “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Best Song Ever,” “Story of My Life,” “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes,” and Penn's singles include “Strip That Down” (Quavo) , which reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Familiar” and “Bedroom Floor”. Earlier this year, she released the song “Teardrops”.

Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son Bear, who he had with former Girls Aloud member and “X Factor” judge Cheryl Tweedy.

On Thursday, nearly 24 hours after news of his death broke, Penn's former bandmates released a statement mourning him, saying they were “absolutely devastated”.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who love him as much as we do,” Styles, Horan, Malik and Tomlinson said in a joint statement posted on the band's Instagram page. “We will miss him dearly. We love you Liam.”

“I am truly devastated by Liam's passing. His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honor to be by his side as he did that,” Styles wrote in a separate statement posted on his Instagram page Thursday. “Liam lived openly, wearing his heart on his sleeve, his life. For there was an energy that was contagious.”

Styles wrote that the years he spent with Payne, whom he described as “warmly supportive and incredibly loving”, will always be “among the most cherished years of my life”.

On his personal Instagram account, Tomlinson also separately paid tribute to Payne, writing that he was “beyond devastated” about the loss of Payne, whom he called “a brother”.

“Liam was someone I looked up to every day, such a positive, funny and kind soul,” Tomlinson wrote. “And for the record, Liam was the most important part of One Direction in my opinion. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for forming us Liam.”

Malik also posted a tribute on his Instagram page Thursday, writing that he wished he could hug Payne “one last time.”

“When I lost home as a 17-year-old kid you were always there with a positive attitude and reassuring smile letting me know you were my friend and loved,” she wrote, addressing Payne directly.

Fellow artists also offered their condolences, including singer Rita Ora, who collaborated with Penn on a song called “For You” in 2018. She wrote on her X page on Thursday that she “loved working with her – she was such a joy to be on stage and off.”

During his concert in Japan on Wednesday night, Ora paid tribute to Payne by performing “For You” and video footage from the concert show, tearing through the song. At one point, Ora told the audience “I can't even sing it now” before sitting on stage and putting her head in her hands. A photo of Ora and Penn together in the studio flashed across the screen behind him.

Payne's friend James Corden posted a tribute on Instagram on Thursday in which he wrote, “To talk about Liam in the past is absolutely heartbreaking.”

“I will cherish the moments I spent with him,” he added.
