The Dolphins need a high-quality backup quarterback for the remainder of Tua Tagovailoa's career
Tua Tagovailo is back. That's good news for him and the Dolphins. The basic fact remains that he is returning to a sport that has injuries at the top of the list of potential injuries that could be experienced.
For a player who has suffered three (and possibly four) concussions in less than two years — two of which were triggered by fencing poses — it's not a big matter of when or if. And with extended absences after each of his last two, it's important for the Dolphins to prepare for the next one.
After his latest, they were not. Only Tua can run the crime. None of the backups were able to handle the time-based, shell-game distribution of the ball behind the line of scrimmage. No one could consistently get the ball to Tyreek Hill. Someone was guilty of giving a kick in the ass.
Tua's new deal carries a three-year commitment. The Dolphins need to have a high-end backup for that stretch. Really, as long as Tua is the team's starting quarterback, the Dolphins would be crazy not to have someone who can step in and get going.
It's not clear why they haven't drafted someone who can score points and win games. Maybe they didn't want Tua to feel threatened by a backup who could be almost as good as Tua.
If so, those days must be over. They can't tiptoe around Tua. They need to have a No. 2 that can be as good as Tua, because they have to anticipate that they will need that guy after a given game.
It is not unfair to you. It reflects common sense.
Dolphins weren't smart enough in the past. At this point, it would be the height of folly not to have a good backup plan for a quarterback who has a documented availability issue that could pop up again at any time and without warning.
