'SNL' Vice President Debate with Jim Gaffigan's Tim Walz and Bowen Young's JD Vance

Saturday Night Live On Saturday Bowen took the stage to debate Young's JD Vance and Jim Gaffigan's Tim Walz.

The latest episode parodied the vice presidential debate from earlier this week, which saw an awkward Vance and Boca Walz face off in a somewhat cordial debate. And SNLIts cold opening brings out the same power.

The sketch began with Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg's Douglas Emhoff watching a debate. “I feel good tonight,” Rudolph said. “We have momentum. Liz Cheney is going to support me and Bruce Springsteen. 'Cause baby I was born to run (referring to his song 'Born to Run').

The debate began with moderators Heidi Gardner's Norah O'Donnell and Chloe Fineman's Margaret Brennan asking the candidates for their opening statements.

“Thank you for having me. I want to start with something that will appeal to women voters. I understand that both moderators tonight are moms and I love that,” Young's Vance said awkwardly.

The moderators then toss to a seemingly frantic Walz, who is scribbling on a stack of papers: “Are you preparing your answer?” Brennan asks.

“No, I have to grade these papers,” said Gaffigan's Walz. “Got a stack of midterms.”

Moderators began their questions first, focusing on how the candidates would address the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

“It's an important question,” Vance said as he avoided a direct answer. “Margaret, one that deserves an answer because it's important and it's a question you asked me tonight.”

As for Walz, he doesn't know the answer either, “So I'm just going to say a bunch of basic words because debate is 30 percent fun and 70 percent mental.”

Rudolph's Harris begins to worry about her running mate's reaction, but her husband eases her worries, saying, “It's not like she's going to say anything crazy.”

But Samberg's Emhoff spoke too soon. “I've made friends with school shooters,” Gaffigan's Walz yelled, referring to a moment during the debate with the Democratic candidate's misspoke.

“As a stupid white guy, it really turns my colleague back,” Samberg's Emhoff responded. “I'm in a group chat with Josh Gad and Jason Kelsey and the mood is dark.”

There was also a moment during the sketch, where the two VP candidates found some surprisingly “common ground” and took a moment to look each other in the eye. But the moderators quickly got them back on track with the debate, asking Vance if he would certify the results of the upcoming election, as Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.

“It's rich to say that Donald Trump is a threat to democracy when he took office peacefully — no fact-checking — and willingly — check — boarded his plane without incident after saving Obamacare — check. “Vance says a fact-check fear.

Dana Carvey's Joe Biden later visited Harris' home to insist that during the debate, Walz should highlight “all the great things we've done” in the past four years in the White House.

“Gas prices are going down, border crossings are going down and Emmys are going down for 'The Bear,'” he says. “Everyone get down…tonight.”

Comedian Nate Bargatze returns to Studio 8H on Saturday to host the sketch comedy show for the second time, with musical guest Coldplay.

At the end of the episode, SNL Also remembered Kris Kristofferson, who died on September 28, with a special tribute card. The country singer-songwriter hosted the NBC show in 1976 with musical guest Rita Coolidge.
