'SNL' mocks VP debate: JD Vance and Tim Walz are too friendly, Vance complains about fact checking

The Oct. 5 episode of “Saturday Night Live” opened with a political cold open mocking this week's vice presidential debate.

The sketch begins with Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph) and her husband Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg) watching the debate from home. With Norah O'Donnell (Heidi Gardner) and Margaret Brennan (Chloe Fineman) moderating, Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan) and JD Vance (Bowen Young) lightly bump into each other during the debate.

Vance addressed her awkwardness, beginning with her opening statement, “I want to start with something that will appeal to women voters: I understand that both moderators tonight are mothers, and I like that.”

Meanwhile, Walz revealed his teaching past, saying on stage, “I have to grade these papers … I have to stack the midterms.” He later revealed his biggest mistake of the evening, “I made friends with school shooters.”

The sketch then shifts into misogyny, parodying the candidates' tendency to agree with each other during debates. “This guy is good — he's got an answer for everything,” Walz said, soon turning to Vance and sharing an emotional moment as the two reached their podium to touch each other.

Vance concluded the piece by accusing Donald Trump of not wanting fact-checking to encourage a peaceful transfer of power, saying, “He handed over power peacefully — we said no fact-checking — and voluntarily got on his plane without incident … Don Don't check it.”

Joe Biden (Dana Carvey) then attacked Harris and Emhoff's watch party with his signature ice cream cones, folksy wisdom and general confusion.
