Prince William makes rare comment about brother Prince Harry amid family rift: 'I was a bit concerned'
Prince William recalls a transformative childhood moment he shared with his brother Prince Harry, in his two-part documentary “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness.”
In a clip released Saturday, the royal shared that his interest in charitable endeavors began after his late mother, Princess Diana, took him and his brother to The Passage, a UK charity that helps people who are at risk of or are homeless.
“My mother took me to The Passage; He took both Harry and I there. I was 11, maybe 10 at the time,” William said. “I'd never been in anything like this before and I was a bit anxious about what to expect.”
“My mother was doing her usual work, making everyone feel relaxed, laughing and joking. I remember kind of thinking at the time, 'Well, if everybody didn't have a house, they'd all be really sad.' But it was incredible how much fun it was,” he recalls.
“I remember having some good conversations, playing chess, chatting and that's when I remembered that there are other people out there who don't have the same life as you.”
William continued, “You know, when you're very young, you think that all you see in front of you is life and you have no idea where else to look. When you meet people like I did, People put a different perspective in your head and say, 'Well, I was living on the street last night,' and you're like, 'Oh.' I remember that happening.”
The documentary is believed to be the first time the royal has spoken publicly about her brother amid their ongoing family feud.
Reports emerged that the rift between the Duke of Sussex and his brother was “very bad” but not “irreparable” in the summer as their relationship suffered another setback when Harry requested extra security for her and his family when he traveled to his home country.
At the same time, sources also said that King Charles stopped speaking to Harry after his cancer diagnosis, despite his son's efforts to check on the king's health.
A royal insider previously told Page Six that the only way for Harry and Charles to reconcile is for the monarch to grant Harry the heightened security clearance he has requested for years.
“As king, he is the ultimate decision maker. This is how the father-son reunion can happen,” the source said.
“Prince William: We Can End Homelessness” will air on ITV in the UK on October 30 and 31.
