OMG! Onward Mets Go Thanks To Alonso's Epic HR

MILWAUKEE — The season is over. The Mets boarded their flight home. Then Pete Alonso delivered the most significant hit of his life.

With the Mets down to their final two outs, Alonso hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning to send the Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series on Thursday. Will advance to the NL Division Series against the Phillies starting Saturday. The Brewers are going home.

After falling behind to back-to-back homers by Zach Bowers and Sal Frelick in the seventh inning, the Mets rallied on a leadoff walk and Brandon Nimmo's one-out hit in the ninth. Facing Milwaukee closer Devin Williams, Alonso followed with a three-run shot to the opposite field, as the Mets came out of their dugouts to celebrate. For a moment, the sellout crowd at American Family Field fell silent.

Alonso became the first player in MLB history to hit a go-ahead homer in the ninth inning or later in a winner-take-all postseason game.

It was nothing short of a catharsis for Alonso, who slumped to 5-for-41 with just one RBI since Sept. 19. Alonso not only extended his time with the Mets, but reshaped the narrative surrounding the type of player he could be.

Starling Marte added an RBI single for the Mets to help lead off Edwin Diaz, who recorded five outs after the Brewers took the lead against Jose Batto. Jose Quintana blanked Milwaukee through the first six innings of the game. David Peterson worked the ninth for the save, hitting Brice Turang into a double play to end it.
