Northern lights could be visible over New Hampshire

The northern lights may be visible in New Hampshire Saturday night, and the forecast is favorable with a mainly clear sky expected overhead.

The best time to try and catch a glimpse will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Saturday night. Dress accordingly as it will be chilly with temperatures dropping back into the 50s and 40s in that timeframe.

The best way to view the aurora is to go somewhere away from city lights, find an open space and look north low on the horizon.

You can also use your cellphone camera to help you out. The camera on a cellphone will pick up more light than your eyes, so the camera app might show some colors in the sky that you can’t see.

If your camera shows the greens or pinks that are typical of the northern lights, snap a quick picture and then put your phone away to let your eyes adjust to the darkness.

You may be able to catch a very faint glow with the naked eye, but using a slow-shutter speed on your camera will allow for a better view.
