Nicki Jam withdraws Donald Trump endorsement, says she's 'walking away' from politics: 'Puerto Rico deserves respect'

Puerto Rican artist Nicki Jam returned her support for presidential candidate Donald J. Trump on Wednesday. In a video uploaded to Jam's Instagram, the reggaeton star is seen sitting in a luxury car as he explains that he no longer supports Trump following Tony Hinchcliffe's racist comments about Puerto Rico and Latinos at a rally over the weekend.

“The reason I support Donald Trump is because I believe it's the best for the economy of the United States, where a lot of Latinos live… a lot of immigrants who are suffering because of the state of the economy,” Jam said in Spanish. “With [Trump] Being a businessman I felt it was the right move.”

He said that he “never in his life” thought that a month later, “a comedian would be seen criticizing me and saying bad things about me. [Puerto Rico],” he said. “Therefore I am withdrawing my support for Donald Trump and withdrawing from any political conversation. Puerto Rico deserves respect.”

Hinchcliffe, who was a keynote speaker at a Trump rally at New York's Madison Square Garden on October 27, made derogatory comments about Latinos and their children. He added, “There is literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it's called Puerto Rico.”

The vehement racist comments sparked outrage among prominent Puerto Ricans and others in media and entertainment, including Bad Bunny, Don Omar, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin.

Jam has previously appeared at Trump rallies himself, sparking outrage — and a viral moment — after Trump was identified and misgendered as an ardent supporter of his campaign. Trump was clearly under the mistaken impression that Jam was a “hot” woman, announcing his endorsement of “Latin music superstar Nicki Jam”: “Do you know Nicki? She's hot!”

Jam has never commented on misgendering, and remained relatively quiet about his participation in the rally until Wednesday's update.
