New details come out in court hearing for fmr. sheriff accused of killing judge
MORGAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – Former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines appeared in court again Tuesday.
Stines is accused of killing District Judge Kevin Mullins. Last week, during his arraignment hearing, Stines pleaded not guilty to murder.
A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday in Morgan County District Court.
The prosecutor asked KSP a few questions and then showed a video of the shooting, which showed Judge Mullins being shot several times and falling behind his desk in his chambers.
People in the courtroom were heard wailing and sobbing as they reacted to that shocking video being shown.
A detective testified the shooter was Stines. The detective said after the shooting, Stines appeared calm and said, “Treat me fair.”
Under cross-examination, the detective also testified that Stines tried calling his daughter from his and Judge Mullins’ phones and that Stines’ daughter’s cell number was on Judge Mullins’ phone.
The judge found probable cause for the murder charge, and the case will now be sent to a grand jury.
Monday, Stines announced in a statement from his attorney that he was retiring as sheriff. He is being held in the Leslie County Jail.
This is a developing story.
