Miley Cyrus sued for copying Bruno Mars on Grammy-winning hit 'Flowers'
Miley Cyrus was sued for copyright infringement after allegedly copying Bruno Mars in the creation of her Grammy-winning hit, “Flower.”
According to documents obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music Investments claims that Cyrus' 2023 smash single shares “a lot of musical similarities” to Mars' 2012 ballad “When I Was Your Man.”
The investment platform — which claims to own a portion of the copyright to the Mars track — alleges that the chorus, melody, melody, melodic progression and lyrics of “Flower” are “deliberately” taken from the “24K Magic” hitmaker's song.
Mars, however, is not named as a plaintiff in the filing.
Reps for Mars, 38, and Cyrus, 31, did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment.
Earlier this year, the “Malibu” songstress received her first Grammy for “Flowers,” winning record of the year and best pop solo performance over Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish.
“This award is amazing, but I really hope it doesn't change anything, because yesterday my life was beautiful,” Cyrus said during the recording of her acceptance speech of the year.
“Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular, so please don't think it matters.”
The two-time Grammy winner is rumored to have written the song about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, whom she was married to from 2018 to 2020.
Cyrus, who has been in the music industry for decades, later questioned why it took so long to receive recognition from the Recording Academy.
“No shade, but I've been doing this for 20 years, and this is the first time being taken seriously at the Grammys?” she said in an interview with W magazine in June.
“I had a hard time figuring out what the measurement was, because if we were talking about statistics and numbers, where was I? And if you want to talk about, like, impact on culture, where was I?”
However, the pop star clarified, “It's not about ego. I am proud of myself.”
Cyrus made her debut in the industry at the age of 12, starring in Disney Channel's “Hannah Montana” from 2006 to 2011.
The singer then began topping the charts with hits like “Party in the USA” and “Wrecking Ball.”
