Justin Fields: Caleb Williams 'will get most of the blame… I think he'll be fine'

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields is confident that Caleb Williams, his replacement on the Chicago Bears, is “going to be good” amid a rough start to his NFL career.

“Obviously, it's not just him, but he's going to get most of the blame because of the position he's in,” Fields told Fox News Digital's Chantz Martin. “But overall … I know the guys out there want to get better, and I think they're going to get better. So, I'm hoping they start to get [the things] They have committed crimes.

“[Caleb] The two played pretty good defense, so I think he'll be fine.”

Williams certainly gets his fair share of criticism. Through two games, he has 267 passing yards and two touchdowns and 59 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Concerns about whether the No. 1 overall pick might try to overachieve have been well-founded by now. He's learning the hard way that stretching games too long in the NFL can have disastrous results.

Among the discussions surrounding Williams, however, is an acknowledgment that he is not solely to blame for the passing game's struggles. While some of the issues that have plagued Chicago's Fields have been carrying over this year, the quarterback obviously isn't the only source.

Overreaction is a feature of the first few weeks of any NFL season and rookie quarterbacks, once given a reasonable level of opportunity given their performance, are expected to hit the ground running right away.

As for Williams, he should iron out some of his flaws as he gains more experience. In particular, he will better understand what he can and cannot do as a playmaker.

But some of the issues affecting the Bears offense require solutions much higher up in the organization.
