Jane's Addiction concert ends abruptly after Perry Farrell punches Dave Navarro onstage
A Jane's Addictions reunion concert in Boston ended prematurely on Friday after singer Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro on stage and mid-song.
As video of the event emerged, during a performance of “Ocean Size,” Pharrell became agitated for an unclear reason, walked up to Navarro and bumped his shoulder into the guitarist's back. An aggressive and still-angry Pharrell then continued to yell at a confused Navarro, with the singer eventually landing a right hook on his longtime band mate's shoulder:
“What the fuck?” A crew member detained Farrell and questioned Navarro; When the singer tried to avoid crew members and Blitz Navarro again, two other crew members and even bassist Eric Avery ran to restrain Farrell and threw him backstage. Navarro eventually left the stage and the concert ended after 11 songs, three or four songs less than a typical show so far on Jane's Addiction's now-threatened reunion tour.
According to diversityWhatever happened between the bandmates onstage in Boston has been hot since the “core four” lineup's first tour in 14 years, which launched in August. At the previous stop, Farrell's long batting with the crowd left Navarro visibly frustrated on stage. diversity Also noted that several concert reviews noted that Pharrell consumed a bottle of red wine on stage throughout the performance.
However, none of the early incidents — including a pair of problems in New York City earlier in the week — described what happened in Boston: Jambase reported that the problem started during “Mountain Song,” Pharrell yelling at Navarro. The feud continues through the next song “Three Days” and ends with “Ocean Size” Punch.
Jane's Addiction has yet to comment on the collision, and Avery's Instagram — which often posts while the band is on the road — hasn't mentioned the incident either. However, Pharrell's wife ET wrote a lengthy explainer on social media that broke down the situation.
“Obviously there was a lot of tension and animosity between the members.. The magic made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit,” wrote Lou Farrell.
“Perry's frustration grew as night after night, he felt the stage volume was too loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and sore throat every night. But when the front-row audience started complaining to Perry that the band was playing too loud and they couldn't hear him, Perry lost it.”
ET added that there was also a confrontation backstage between Pharrell and Avery, who “put Perry in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach.”
“Perry was a mad animal for the next half hour – at the end he didn't calm down, but broke down and cried,” ET added of the backstage scene. “Eric, he didn't understand what was going on [sic] Confused or took advantage of the situation and got a few cheap shots on Perry.”
Liam Gallagher, an expert on intra-band bickering, tweeted in response to the video of Jane's battle with addiction, “Attitude stinks there.” When a fan quipped that something similar would happen between Liam and Noel during the Oasis reunion tour, Liam responded, “I don't think we're very professional these days. We'll blow your mind.”
Jane's Addiction Reunion Tour will – for now – continue Sunday night in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The track itself is scheduled to end on October 16 in the band's native Los Angeles. The tour marked the first time in 14 years that the band's “core four” lineup — Pharrell, Navarro, Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins — toured together, and comes after Navarro temporarily left the band amid a long battle with Covid.
