Jane's Addiction cancels tour, takes a break after Perry Farrell punches Dave Navarro during concert
Jane says… tour is over. Jane's Addiction canceled its tour midway through the band's trek after frontman Perry Farrell threw a punch at guitarist Dave Navarro during the band's show on Friday (September 13) at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston.
“The band made the difficult decision to take some time off as a group. As such, they will cancel the rest of the tour,” the band said in a brief statement on Monday (September 16). Refunds will be issued at the time of purchase.
Pharrell expressed his sadness over Friday's incident in a statement shared exclusively Billboard Monday, September 16. “This weekend was incredibly difficult and after having time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday's show. ,” Rocker said. “Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full responsibility for how I chose to handle the situation.”
In fan-captured videos that went viral after Friday's show, Pharrell can be seen singing to the audience on stage before turning to Navarro and shouting the lyrics, seemingly enraged. The frontman then walks over to the guitarist, continues his yelling, before checking the guitarist's body, steps back, then yells back into Navarro's face while the guitarist-turned-actor – who looks confused – calmly holds Pharrell at arm's length as the frontman screams. Pharrell then threw a punch at his guitarist and a crew member came on stage, repeatedly telling Pharrell to “Stop! Stop!” More crew members rushed the stage to intercept the rocker and get him off the stage.
The next day, Jane's Addiction issued a statement via the band's Instagram Stories. “We sincerely apologize to our fans for what happened last night,” the statement read. The band then noted that the following show at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater on Sunday (September 15) has been cancelled.
Pharrell's wife, Etty Lou Pharrell, shared a statement on her own Instagram after the altercation. Reposting the video of the incident, he explained how he saw the situation. “Obviously there was a lot of tension and animosity between the members.. the magic that made the band so dynamic,” he wrote. “Well, the dynamite lit up. Perry got in Dave's face and body checked him.”
“Perry's frustration grew, night after night, he felt the stage volume was too loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band,” she said, adding that her husband was struggling with a sore throat and tinnitus. “But when the front-row audience started complaining to Perry that the band was playing too loud and they couldn't hear him, Perry lost it.”
She went on to praise Navarro for trying to defuse the situation, noting that the guitarist “still looked handsome and calm in the middle of a battle,” while her husband was “a crazy beast.” “Eventually he didn't calm down, but broke down and kept crying,” Etty added.
Jane's Addiction — who logged one song on the Billboard Hot 100 and three No. 1 hits on the Alternative Airplay chart since the mid-'80s — was about halfway through her tour with Love and Rocket. The tour, produced by Live Nation, was scheduled to conclude on October 16 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
