Jane's Addiction cancels the show and apologizes for the fight between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro
After an onstage fight broke out between Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro, the band issued a “heartfelt apology” to fans.
In an Instagram story shared from the band's official account on September 14, the group took responsibility for the September 13 incident and said they would be canceling their upcoming concert to refund patrons.
“We would like to sincerely apologize for what happened last night,” the message read. “As a result we will be canceling tomorrow night's show in Bridgeport.”
The message continued, “Refunds will be issued on your points purchases,” before sharing additional refund details.
The September 13 show at Boston's Leader Bank Pavilion came to an abrupt end after a dispute between Jane's Addiction bandmates Pharrell and Navarro. In fan videos shared on social media, Pharrell is seen shoving Navarro in the shoulder during the concert and then yelling at the guitarist before he was restrained and removed from the stage.
TODAY.com reached out to Jane's Addiction and representatives for Pharrell and Navarro for comment but did not hear back.
According to Rolling Stone, the feud comes just months after the band's original members reunited for the first time in more than three decades for their new song “Imminent Redemption,” released in July 2024.
The group has had a tumultuous history together, including a breakup and subsequent reunion in the early '90s and further rifts between on-and-off-again bandmates.
Here's what we know about the incident between Pharrell and Navarro at the recent Jane's Addiction concert.
What happened at Jane's Addiction Boston concert?
Jane's Addiction was in the middle of performing a concert in Boston when an altercation broke out between the lead singer and the guitarist.
Fan videos on social media showed the incident taking place while the band was performing their song “Ocean Size”. Towards the end of the song, Pharrell stepped forward several times at Navarro's direction, eventually approaching him on stage and tapping him on the shoulder.
From there, the dispute escalated. After the shoulder bump, Ferrell backed up for a moment before approaching Navarro again, staring him down as he approached the guitar. Crew members began to intervene when Pharrell was seen yelling in Navarro's face, as he held his hand to put distance between him and the singer.
As crew members approached, Farrell tried to take a swing before pulling Navarro away. A crew member could be heard telling Farrell to stop, but he became agitated and tried to break free of his restraints. Eventually, additional crew members entered the stage as the lights went down to try to further restrain Pharrell and removed him from the stage.
What caused the feud between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro?
The day after the incident, Pharrell's wife Ettie Lou Farrell posted a video of the altercation on Instagram on September 14 and used the caption to explain a “first-person account” of what happened “instead of speculating.”
“Obviously there was a lot of tension and animosity between the members.. the magic was what made the band so dynamic,” wrote ET's Lou Farrell. “Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got in Dave's face and body checked him.”
She wrote that her husband's “desperation grew, night after night.” He said he felt the stage volume was loud that evening and “his voice was drowned out by the band.”
“Perry was suffering from tinnitus and sore throat every night,” she added about her husband's health. “But when the front-row audience started complaining to Perry that the band was playing too loud and they couldn't hear him, Perry lost it.”
Things bubbled up when the band started performing “Ocean Size” before Etty Lau Farrell's husband was ready. He added, “The stage volume was so loud at the time that Perry couldn't hear the booms and vibrations of the instruments, and by the end of the song, he wasn't singing, he was shouting just be. I heard.”
She also said that after the fight, her husband “was a mad animal for the next half hour” and that he “did not calm down, but broke down and cried.”
What did the fans say about the incident?
Fans on social media had a lot to say about the incident, with one X user joking, “Some people paid for Jane's addiction but got Oasis instead.”
Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher even weighed in on the situation, responding to a video of the altercation at X saying, “Attitude stinks there.”
“I think I just watched the last Jane Addiction show,” another fan speculated on social media.
Another fan added, “Well… so much for reconciling that Jane's addiction.”
In the days leading up to the Boston gig, fans who had attended earlier dates on the tour expressed concern about the future status of Pharrell and the group.
“Probably saw the last Jane's Addiction show tonight in NYC,” one fan X wrote on Sept. 10. Everyone else, on the other hand, sounded better than the live recordings I heard in their prime.”
Has anyone been injured or arrested from Jane's Addiction?
It is unclear whether any injuries resulted from the altercation between members of Jane's Addiction. At this time, there has been no confirmation from the band's representatives to confirm if any arrests have been made.
Is Jane's Addiction tour canceled after their fight in Boston?
The future of Jane's Addiction tour has not been announced.
After playing numerous dates in August and early September, the band will perform at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut on September 15.
The band has dates booked through the rest of September and into mid-October, with the tour wrapping up at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
TODAY.com reached out to Live Nation to see if fans would be refunded for the show and if future tour dates would be canceled, but was not heard back by publication time.
