Jane's addiction cancels her tour after an onstage concert fracas
BOSTON (AP) – Alternative rock band Jane's Addiction has canceled its latest tour Clash on stage Between lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro. Pharrell later apologized for the “inexcusable behavior”.
“The band made the difficult decision to take some time off as a group. As such, they will be canceling the rest of the tour,” the band said in a brief statement monday
The videos show Navarro lunging at a Friday concert in Boston, before taking a swing at the guitarist with his right arm and hitting Navarro with his shoulder. Navarro can be seen holding up his right arm to keep Pharrell at bay before being dragged off stage by others. The show ended shortly after and the band apologized.
As the alternative rock and grunge music movements grew in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band is known for the edgy, punk-inspired hits “Zane Ball,” “Bean Catch Stealing” and “Just Cause.” It has had three top five hits on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart.
Pharrell said in a statement to Variety and The New York Times, “This weekend was incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it's only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, to the fans, during my Friday show. Family and friends for action. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full responsibility for how I chose to handle the situation.”
Perry's wife, Etty Lou Farrell, wrote on Instagram the day after the altercation that her husband's “”frustration grew, night after night, he felt the stage volume was too loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. ”
She said her husband suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat and “at the end of the song, he wasn't singing, he was just shouting to be heard.” She said her husband later broke down “and cried.”
The band's “Imminent Redemption” tour — with opening act English rock band Love & Rockets — kicked off in early August and will conclude Oct. 16 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
The North American shows marked the first time since 2010 that the original Jane's Addiction lineup — Pharrell, Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery — played an extended show together.
Navarro, Perkins and Avery said in a statement posted on Navarro's Instagram of Farrell on Monday: “We hope he gets the help he needs.”
