Eagles news: AJ Brown out, two practice squads announced

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially announced some roster news and injury updates ahead of their Week 4 road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An overview:

  • WR AJ Brown and LB Devin White were demoted and ruled out.
  • Temporarily promoted WR Parris Campbell and WR John Ross from the practice squad.

Note: Teams may temporarily promote practice squad players up to three times during the regular season and an unlimited number of times during the postseason.

Let's sort this news out on a player-by-player basis.

AJ Brown

Brown was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report. He hasn't played since Week 1. The Eagles will surely miss him.

Devin White

White wasn't even on the injury report this week; He is a brand new addition. The Eagles listed him as “private” before a game against his former team. White has been a healthy scratch in the last two weeks. Seems sure they could cut or trade White soon?

Paris Campbell

The Eagles needed more wide receiver depth, including placing Brown/DeVonta Smith and Brittain Covey on injured reserve. Elevating Campbell gives Jalen Hurts a veteran option to work with. Campbell logged two targets in Week 3 and that resulted in two catches for 13 yards.

Campbell is now capped at regular season practice squad height. The Eagles will have to sign him to the roster if they want him to play for them again. Of course, they're hoping he won't have to use it with DeVonta and AJ expected to be back in action after the Week 5 bye. The Eagles have several other receivers on the practice squad.

John Ross

The Eagles signed Ross to their offseason roster on the practice squad earlier this week. The team seems to value his familiarity with the system and his experience working with Hearts. In theory, Ross brings big-play ability to the table with his deep speed.

With those two PS highs, the Eagles will have four receivers active on Sunday: Jahan Dotson, Johnny Wilson, Campbell and Ross. This WR situation is definitely not ideal but the Eagles have to figure out how it works for a game.

(#JerseyNumberAnalytics note: Ross is wearing No. 38. Yes. It's not that he had too much choice but just a tough look. Anything against his previous number, No. 83, though? Also, it's wearing a number in the 30s. (Could frustrate the Bucs if they get beat by receivers.)

Lane Johnson

It's perhaps worth noting that Johnson, who was ruled as questionable as Brown, was not demoted to the outs. John Clark reports that things are trending for Johnson to start at right tackle.
