Dubs Curry limps off with sprained ankle; Next MRI
SAN FRANCISCO — Warriors guard Stephen Curry was scheduled to have an MRI Sunday evening for a sprained left ankle that forced him out early in the fourth quarter of Golden State's 112-104 loss to the LA Clippers.
Curry described the injury as “mild to moderate,” coach Steve Kerr said after the game. However, there is a level of concern for the veteran, as he is suffering from multiple sprains in that ankle.
The team is preparing for Curry to miss time, possibly several games, sources told ESPN.
“I'm more comfortable that we can handle the absence offensively without Steph [our] Depth,” Kerr told ESPN.
Curry first sprained his ankle with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. He immediately checked out of the game, hobbled to the sideline and sat on the bench, where he was shown around by athletic trainer Drew Yoder.
Curry rocked back and forth in his chair for a few minutes before starting to stretch his ankle with a resistance band.
He returned to the game four minutes into the fourth quarter. Just seconds later, as Curry tried to fight through a screen, he aggravated the injury. This time, he walked off the court and into the locker room, using the support of Gary Payton II and walking in much worse shape than before.
“[I just] Shake my head,” Peyton said. “Hate to get it, especially with him. But we will be all right. … Hopefully he won't miss too much, but we'll have to find out.”
Curry finished the night with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including four 3-pointers and six assists.
“We've got to stick together,” Buddy Hield told ESPN about the possibility of playing without Curry. “It will be a great challenge.”
If Curry misses time, the Warriors will need someone to take over the primary scoring duties. As a sixth man, Hield is averaging 19 points in 20.8 minutes and shooting 53% from 3.
Kerr mentioned Andrew Wiggins as a player who could take on a more offensive leadership role. Coaches have been encouraging him to become a high-volume scorer since training camp.
Against the Clippers, Wiggins finished with 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-8 from 3.
“The Whigs got off to a great start and had a great night,” Kerr said. “He's an obvious candidate to get the ball more. But we have a deep team. We have a lot of guys who can play. We'll be ready.”
