Jack Rogers drew a leadoff walk to Tim Herrin, but Hunter Gaddis came out of Cleveland's bullpen to close out the inning with a double play by Kerry Carpenter. Keidar Montero doubled to Brian Roccio, but struck out Kyle Manzardo to cap a scoreless second inning.
7th End: Tigers back to 1-2-3 again, Guardians trail 7-0
A massive comeback looks very unlikely.
The Tigers' offense was again shut down, this time by left-hander Tim Herrin, for another 1-2-3 inning without a scoring threat. Keider Montero came into the game soaking up the outs and had 1-2-3 innings with strikeouts against Andres Gimenez and Jhonkensy Noel.
Bottom 6: Cleveland adds two runs, Smith strikes out side; The Tigers trailed 7-0
Ty Madden came on to relieve Reese Olson and get out of his first postseason inning unscathed. David Frye reached the top of an eight-pitch battle and hooked a slider down the left field line for a two-run double after Madden put both on base with a walk. Then Sean Guenther came in to finish the scoring.
The Tigers are in bad shape against Cade Smith. The right-handed flamethrower out of the bullpen struck out four Detroit batters in a row. He got Matt Vierling to chase a low sweeper, Riley Green to swing over a splitter and Colt Keith to miss on a 97.4 mph fastball.
5th End: Reese Olson throws another 1-2-3 inning; The Tigers trailed 5-0
It may be too late, but Reese Olson has settled into a beautiful rhythm. He pitched his second straight 1-2-3 inning on seven pitches, including a Josh Naylor groundout, a Lane Thomas flyout and an Andres Gimenez groundout. Olson has recorded nine straight strikeouts.
Bibby was pulled from the game after a two-out single by Parker Meadows, but Cade Smith struck out Kerry Carpenter on an outside fastball to end the inning. Beebe threw 4⅔ scoreless innings allowing four hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
Last 4: Tigers can't capitalize with 2 on, no out; Trailing Guardians 5-0
For the first time, the Guardians were dismissed by the Tigers. Steven Kwan flied out to center on a hard hit, followed by a groundout to first by David Frye and a flyout to right by Jose Ramirez.
The Tigers put two on base with no outs when Riley Green singled and Colt Keith walked, but Spencer Torkelson grounded into a double play and Jack McKinstry grounded out to end the threat. BB has been on 68 pitches allowing three hits, one walk and five strikeouts in four innings.
Last 3rd: Tigers offense goes 1-2-3; Guardians lead 5-0
Olson opened the inning by hitting a pitch, but John Kensi responded by hitting Noel with a fastball to the knee and striking out Bo Naylor on an outside changeup. Andres Gimenez went to second with two outs, but Brian Roccio ended the inning with the first out.
The Tigers go down quietly at the top of the order for the second time up. Parker Meadows popped out, Kerry Carpenter on a high fastball and Matt Vierling grounded out to second base.
Last 2nd: Olson avoids jam, Bibby strikes out three; The Tigers trailed the Guardians 5-0
The Guardians looked to dominate for another big inning, but Reece Olson struck out Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas on a changeup to end the inning with two outs. Steven Kwan opened the inning with a walk, followed by a David Fry single, but Olson got three straight outs against Cleveland's order, starting with a flyout to center from Jose Ramirez.
Tanner BB worked around Zack McKinstry's double to strike out the team in the top of the inning. Spencer Torkelson worked a 3-0 count, but couldn't connect on two fastballs, Trey Swinney missed on a changeup and Zach Rogers missed a slider over the zone. Beebe has four strikeouts and two hits allowed through one turn of the Tigers' lineup.
Last 1st: Guardians knock around Holton and Olson for a 5-0 lead
Tyler Holton was pulled after giving up two runs before recording an out in the bottom of the first. Steven Kwan hit a leadoff double off the right field wall, followed by a David Fry walk for a 3-2 count. Jose Ramirez then hit a sharp grounder into the right side of the third base bag and Zach McKinstry mishandled the big hop, allowing a run to score on a fielding error and Josh Naylor drove in a single to right for the second run. Reese Olson then came into the game but hung a slider to Lane Thomas, who quickly crushed a three-run home run to left field.
The Tigers worked Tanner Bibby early, but the Guardians starter exited the first unscathed after throwing 27 pitches. Kerry Carpenter reached on a one-out single to center and Riley Green took a curveball off the toe to put two on base, but Colt Keith lined out to left fielder Steven Kwan to end the threat.
Pregame notes
The Tigers lived through the highs and lows of a playoff baseball series in two games and came out on top to advance to the ALDS. Tarik Skubal delivered a Game 1 victory that the bullpen held on to late despite the best efforts of the Astros, and a combined team effort sealed a 5-2 Game 2 victory with Andy Ibenez's three-run double in the top of the eighth inning. and series.
