Daniel Jones: The TJ Watt strip sack was my fault, I made the wrong call at the line
As he often does, Steelers pass rusher TJ Watt made a game-changing play in the fourth quarter Monday night, blowing up Giants right tackle Jermaine Ilumunor, knocking the ball out of Daniel Jones' hands and pouncing. And that raises an important question: Why did the Giants block Watt one-on-one in that situation?
The answer is because Jones was distracted, failing to signal Theo Johnson to go to the other side of the line and assist Illuminor with Watt.
The Giants head coach said after the double play that Illumuno should have gotten help from a chip block by Watt, but a miscommunication led to a pass protection call. Double said Jones was supposed to call for Johnson to move to the other side of the formation to help Watt, but Jones never made the call.
“He was supposed to chip in,” Double said. “DJ was looking at coverage, contact, but Jermaine was expecting a chip. . . . We had a shift at tight end to get to Watt and we didn't get the shift. . . . The DJ looks terrible, to be honest with you. I don't know if he will own it. He came in here thinking he was going to own it, it was a shift that was with the play, he was kind of surveying the coverage, deciding what he wanted to do, and we didn't get the shift.”
Jones owned it.
“I have to transfer, Theo has to transfer,” Jones said. “I was watching the coverage, didn't chip him, Jermaine was expecting a chip and didn't get it, so it was my fault.”
The Giants can't afford to make a mistake like this from their franchise quarterback, and calls are sure to be renewed for the Giants to decide to move on now.
