Cowboys owner Jerry Jones explained himself to The Athletic after firing radio comments on Tuesday
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made headlines Tuesday morning when he became angry during his weekly radio interview, getting defensive when asked about the franchise's lack of offseason moves to improve the roster.
Jones seemed to take exception to the line of questioning as he spoke to the team's flagship radio station, 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. Jones conducts interviews with the station on Tuesday and Friday mornings. He also participated in a pregame interview with the station.
While attending the NFL meeting Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta, Jones explained in an exclusive interview with athleticDiana Rossini's why she reacted the way she did.
“I don't know that I can go as far as shouting volume money,” Jones said. “Okay? But the reality is that if I'm going to be grilled by a tribunal, it's not required by the people I'm paying. I can take it from fans and I can take it from other people. I take a lot of pride in how fair and hard I try to work with the media, we are brothers and sisters. But I was a little disappointed there today.
“We got there as a result of decisions made in the offseason. ok? They can also go back to decisions made in 2010. My point is, and this is from my perspective, no question, I'm sure they would have loved to grill me like the fans are thinking, what about what you're going to do? I get it. I get all that. And really go with it.”
Jones went on to explain how his frustration stemmed from the people asking the questions, not necessarily the topic itself.
“Wrong people who were asking questions. Now, if they were real fans sitting there or if there were people who knew what they were talking about, football people, I might have gotten a different answer.
Jones also made it clear that he has no plans to make significant changes to his coaching staff. Most of Dallas' coaches are either on one-year contracts or in the final year of their contracts. Coach Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his five-year contract.
The Cowboys lost 47-9 to the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, Jones' worst home loss in 35 years as owner and general manager.
“Absolutely,” Jones said when asked about sticking with McCarthy and his coordinators. “Not even a remote thought about it. But the repetition of the game. We obviously know what we did wrong. You can see that. The guys who made it wrong have done it right many times over the last few months. So I know they can go out there and it's OK. can do
“The point is, what do you do? All you do is go out there and do your tricks or do your effort and do all those things and you do it right and you're in games that don't get out of hand and you win.”
Jones said he still believes in the team, which enters its bye week at 3-3.
“Of course we do,” he said. “We have great staff. I am proud of our staff.”
Will Dallas try to improve the roster by making any moves before the trade deadline?
“Don't think so,” Jones said.
