The Steelers plan to give Russell Wilson first-team reps in preparation for Justin Fields to start vs. the Jets.
“[Russell Wilson] Considered this week. We will see where it takes us,” he said.
Tomlin later added: “I'll admit that Russ proved his health last week and we're looking at him hard this week. That's up for consideration.”
Fields started the first six games of the season, helping the Steelers to a 4-2 start but the offense was inconsistent, especially through the air. Over the past two weeks, Fields has thrown for less than 150 yards and completed less than 60 percent of his passes. The dual-threat did most of his leg damage, including two touchdowns in Sunday's win over Las Vegas.
“Justin has been really good, and we've been good at times, but not to be confused with great,” Tomlin told reporters Tuesday when asked why Fields hasn't done enough to be named the starter despite a 4-2 record.
“It's a competitive league, man. We're trying to position ourselves as that team, and we've got a player with talent who hasn't had a chance to play, so we're going to explore those things. Sometimes it's something with what Justin did or didn't do. Don't, for example, use his legs by design and lib. He's thankful for 50-plus yards and two touchdowns on that play as we do at any position.”
The question for Tomlin is whether he believes losing the dynamic rushing element that Fields provides could be worth it if Wilson can bring more to the passing attack. It's also possible the Steelers could use both QBs against the Jets on Sunday night, something Tomlin didn't rule out Tuesday.
