Bill Belichick Fires Jets Owner Woody Johnson For Firing Robert Saleh In 'Manningcast'
Bill Belichick doesn't like the Jets, and he made no bones about it during the “Manningcast” broadcast of the Jets' game against the Bills on Monday night.
Belichick, who served briefly as the Jets' head coach before infamously resigning, blasted the Jets and their owner Woody Johnson for their decision to fire Robert Saleh last week.
“I'm not a big Jets fan, in case you don't know,” former Patriots coaches Eli and Peyton told Manning. “I like Fireman Ed, but that's it. Coach Saleh has done a good job with that program. He brought a culture, a level of toughness and competitiveness. … I thought coach Saleh did a really good job with this team and they're probably not far from winning.
But Belichick — a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach — didn't stop there. He went further in the way Johnson handled things.
“That's what happened with the Jets,” Belichick said when Peyton Manning suggested firing the coach too soon. “They've barely won more than 30 percent in the last 10 years. The owner is the owner, just prepare, fire, aim.”
While there was a sense that the Jets needed to make some changes, the bigger problem in some eyes was offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was demoted from play-calling duties after defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbricht took over as interim head coach.
Belichick already shared his thoughts on the Jets' coaching move before Monday's ESPN alternate broadcast of “Let's Go!” podcast
However, he continued to poke fun at the Jets on Monday night as they lost to the Bills 23-20, even declaring that he had a “spotless” career with the Jets.
“I was the head coach before [Bill Parcells] I was the head coach after Bill resigned. Undefeated, no Oscars, right? Dr. Belichick. “My career as coach of the Jets has been spotless. Never miss a point.”
