Celebrini suffered a lower body injury from a shark last week NHL.com
Maclin Celebrini is out for the week for the San Jose Sharks with a lower body injury.
Celebrini, who was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, had a goal and an assist in 17:35 of ice time in his NHL debut, Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues. The top-line center did not practice Friday and was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
“[He’s] week to week. “That's all I really have,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said “I can't put a timeline on it to be honest with you. I think week to week is exactly where we're thinking. We'll just see how it progresses the next couple here through his rehab. [of] day.”
Celebrini, who turned 18 in June, was the youngest player in men's college hockey last season when he became the youngest to win the Hobe Baker Award, given annually to the top NCAA men's hockey player. He was second among NCAA players with 32 goals and third with 64 points in 38 games for Boston University.
Celebrini also left practice on September 25 with a lower-body injury suffered during training camp and left a preseason game against Utah Hockey Club on October 1 with the same injury.
“Everybody goes through bumps and bruises throughout training camp,” Warsofsky said. “I would say we realized there was something deeper after that [first] Play is a good learning moment for him. Life is unfair sometimes. He is mentally well. He was working here today. It's a hockey game, right? Injuries will happen. Of course, this won't be his last injury and we have to move on.”
Forward Klim Kostin, who was a scratch in the season opener, replaced Celebrini in Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
“I mean, it is [stinks]” Forward Will Smith said. “Obviously, you never want that to happen, but it's part of the game, and hopefully he'll be back soon. … I see him every morning, and he is in good spirits. Obviously, he's lost the game, but he's going to be back soon.”
Mikael Granlund moved to the top line with William Eklund and Tyler Toffoli lost to the Ducks.
“I have spoken [Celerbini] A little, but it is so, ” said Toffoli. “Here as a group, we [have to] Support him. At the end of the day, we have to come to the rink and we have a job. … He's already one of the best players on our team, if not the best. He's going to be missed, and unfortunately, I've been on a team where we've lost one of our best players for a long time, and that gives other guys a chance to step up.”
The Sharks begin a three-game road trip next week that includes the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday and the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.
“Obviously, he's a great player,” Eklund said. “We're going to miss him there, but I think most importantly [thing is] So that he comes back and fully recovered. I think it's hard for him. He wants to be there. He wants to compete with us.”
