The comedian revealed in a recent episode Superfly The podcast, which he co-hosts with David Spade, was completely unplanned when he smashed an ice cream cone into Maya Rudolph's face during last week's cold open.

“The ice cream cone was not planned,” Carvey said. “I asked the prop master to give me an ice cream for the dress show. And then the air show, he gave me a big one [one]And I didn't ask him.”

At the end of the opening sketch of the October 5 episode, in which Curvy's Joe Biden is enjoying some ice cream next to Rudolph's Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg's Doug Emhoff as they watch the vice presidential debate, Curvy puts the ice cream in Rudolph's mouth, seemingly surprised, trying to stifle a laugh.

“I was just kind of gesticulating,” Carvey recalled of the split-second decision. “I thought, 'That's ice cream, big gob. This is Maya's face.' And I didn't mean to hurt him, but I just – I thought of it, and did it in two seconds. So it has to put to rest all rumors and all talk.”

Later in the podcast, Carvey said he thinks he's had a more “playful and funny” reaction to Biden's impressions since the president dropped out of the 2024 presidential race against Donald Trump, adding that “it was a hot stove” when he ran for re-election.

But overall, Carvey never intended to come off as disrespectful to Biden. He sees his impersonation as some exaggeration of the president's unique qualities.

“The main thing is that it makes me laugh, and I'm definitely doing something that he doesn't do,” the comedian added. “He doesn't pop ice cream in his face. Do you know? He doesn't say, 'I can't believe it's not butter.' I'm doing what I did with the first Bush.”

Carvey was a cast member SNL From 1986 to 1993, during which time he played several politicians, including President George HW Bush. And now she's back to star alongside Biden in the NBC show's 50th season.
