Season 3 ended with an 18-month time jump after the Pogues successfully discovered gold in El Dorado. While dealing with the deaths of Ward (Charles Esten) and Big John (Charles Halford), they are approached by Wes Jenrette (David Jensen), who offers them help in finding Blackbeard's treasure.
Meanwhile, the fourth season begins by taking viewers back to the events leading up to that moment. The Pogues have created a safe haven, “Poguelandia 2.0,” where they run a bait, tackle and charter tour shop—and they're swimming in cash.

At the end of Part 1, most of the crew—except JJ and Kiara—head to Charleston in search of the Blue Crown. However, they are not just hunting; Lightner and his boss, Dalia, are also lurking in the shadows trying to find clues.
Pope and Sarah volunteer to go into the catacombs, but Lighter and Dahlia reach the tomb first and steal a scroll hidden there. While the villains manage to escape, Pope and Sarah are not so lucky; Last seen by viewers in Part 1, they're trapped underground as the crypt fills with floodwaters from a nasty storm passing overhead.
Meanwhile, Cleo and John B are unable to stop Lightner and Dahlia when they emerge from the tomb. John B experiences flashbacks of his late father killing Singh's men and has a moment when he tries to shoot Lightner.
Back at OBX, JJ is having a deep moment with his estranged father, Luke. In Episode 2, Wes Jenrette “wrote a letter addressed to Master JJ Maybank,” advising JJ to ask his father about the meaning of the “Albatross” in case something bad happened.
When JJ presses him on the meaning of the word, Luke reveals to JJ that “Albatross” is the name of the boat that Larissa Jenrette died on years ago. He also reveals that he is not JJ's biological father and that the woman JJ believes is his mother was one of Luke's girlfriends.
So, what does this all mean? This means that Larissa is actually JJ's real mother, making Wes his grandfather and Chandler Groff his biological father. Basically, JJ is the one thing he hates the most—a kook.
Additionally, JJ's alleged father makes a surprise appearance at the end of episode 5 along with Hollis Robinson. He seems to be working closely with a local realtor, who is trying to buy the land Jenrette supported Rafe Cameron throughout Part 1.
