Nobuyo Wama, the Japanese voice of Doraemon, has died at the age of 90

Nobuyo Wama, the voice actress whose alto timbre and radiant smile made millions in Japan experience Doraemon, the blue cartoon robot in the children's anime of the same name, died Sept. 29 at a Tokyo hospital. He was 90 years old

His death was confirmed by phone on Friday by Yozo Morita, chief executive of his agency Actors 7, who said he suffered a stroke in 2008 and had been living with dementia since 2015.

For nearly 25 years, Ms. Wama was the voice of Doraemon, a character that first appeared in a manga created in 1969. Doraemon is a robot from the future, whose owner sends him to the present day to help his great-grandfather solve his childhood problems and change his family's fortunes.

The chubby, earless, cat-like robot usually helps the boy Nobita Nobi, using the futuristic gadgets he keeps in his magical pocket. His deep friendship with Nobita and his family made “Doraemon” one of the longest-running shows in Japan and beyond.
