Jennifer Lopez admits she's excited to be single again after her divorce from Ben Affleck.
Talking to comedian Nicky Glasser the interview magazine, the “Let's Get Loud” singer revealed that she is “excited” to be on her own months after she and the actor, 52, filed for divorce. Her comments are the first time Lopez has publicly addressed her split from the Oscar winner.
“Everything I've done in the last 25, 30 years, being in these different challenging situations, what can I do when it's just me flying by myself… if I'm free?” she said
The Grammy nominee then admitted to Glasser that her solo was “new territory.”
“It feels lonely, unfamiliar, scary. It feels bad. It feels desperate. But when you sit through that feeling and go, 'These things aren't going to kill me,' actually, I'm able to find joy and happiness on my own,” said Lopez, who spent much of her summer without Affleck in Los Angeles on their second wedding anniversary. Filing for
At the time, Lopez listed April 26, 2024 as the former couple's separation date.
“Being in a relationship does not define me. I can't find happiness in other people,” Lopez continued. “I must be happy within myself. I'd say I'm a happy person, but still looking for someone else to fill me in, and it's just, 'No, I'm actually good.'”
“Here's the thing,” added Lopez. “There are no new bars because I'm not looking for anyone. How is it?”
It was a bold statement from someone who has been married multiple times and is often seen as a hopeless romantic. But Lopez didn't hesitate to admit that her past self had trapped herself in the idea that love from another person was the key to happiness. She even laughed, lovingly calling her younger self a “dumb***” and a “mom***er” for always chasing relationships.
“For people like us — romantics, who love to be in relationships and dream of growing old with someone — we think, 'I have to be whole and happy,'” Lopez said, reflecting on her past. “But you don't. I've learned that the most important relationship is with yourself.”
Lopez, who was married to Ozani Noah, Chris Judd and Marc Anthony before tying the knot with Affleck in Las Vegas Elopement, is a reflection of how much she has evolved. “I think we tend to distance ourselves from ourselves when we're wrapped up in other people,” she adds, emphasizing that self-love is now her priority.
Despite filing for divorce, Lopez and Affleck remain on friendly terms after reuniting for lunch on September 14 in Los Angeles. They were joined by Lopez's 16-year-old twins, Max and Em, as well as Affleck's children: Finn, 15, and Samuel, 12.
