John Oliver sounds the alarm on 'F*** Boy' JD Vance
John Oliver was shocked by JD Vance's performance in the debate this week, and even more shocked by much of the media's reaction to it.
It's a topic that hit close to home — literally — for the comedian.
Tuesday's vice-presidential matchup between Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz took place across the street from the studio where he films for HBO. Last Week Tonight with John OliverTemporarily turning the room into an official “post-debate spin room.” Oliver began his show on Sunday by jokingly warning his viewers that Donald Trump Jr. took up residence in their skies.
“So if anyone in this audience wakes up tomorrow feeling like you've got a sore throat and you're totally depressed about your dad, that's probably why.”
But Oliver again saved his harshest comments for Trump Sr.'s running mate, deflecting the mainstream media's focus on how Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz remained so civil despite the dire stakes in this November's election.
Most importantly, Vance won't admit that Trump loses in 2020, which is “not a horrible answer” to Oliver compared to Walz last week.
“'I'm focused on the future' is one of the most generic store-brand f—-boy diversions. No wonder Tim Walz broke the fourth wall there like he was Abbott Elementary” said Oliver. “Because 'I'm focused on the future' is what you say when you want to change the subject. If not, you just answer the question.”
Oliver also addressed new revelations contained in special counsel Jack Smith's 160-page brief, which was sealed by a judge last week and contains bombastic evidence of crimes Trump committed in an attempt to sway the outcome of the 2020 election. Oliver said the court documents “remind us yet again of the ridiculous measures he took to avoid leaving office.” Among them, Trump reportedly told people at the White House that he knew he had lost but lied anyway, saying he would “fight like hell” even if he didn't lose.
“But if you lose, it's very important. It's the main thing that's kind of important. If you work in the White House, it's the most uncomfortable thing you could possibly hear,” Oliver said.
Oliver said Trump silenced and mocked lawyer Sidney Powell during a phone call “while he was outlining his fraud claims”. “If I ever find out that I lied so badly that Donald Trump muted the call that it was some crazy —, you'll never see me again. I'll walk straight into the ocean.”
Oliver continued: “And none of this is theoretical. If he loses next month, there's every reason to believe that Trump will again dispute the result, and Vance has made it clear that he has no problem with that. And that alone should be disqualified.
“For all the talk about his civility in the debates this week, let's not forget: Deep down he's the same Big Dips—who continues to spew right-wing hate with disturbing ease and defend the Big L that stole the last election. It's all very dark, which is why — to borrow a phrase I heard recently — I'm focused on the future, especially one where, in four weeks, Trump will hopefully lose this election.”
