Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris Can't Handle VP Candidates' Vibing During Spoof Debate on 'SNL' CNN
Maya Rudolph and the political impersonators of the 2024 election cycle returned to the Studio 8H stage in New York on Saturday for the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live,” taking last Tuesday's vice-presidential debate into a cold open.
As Kamala Harris, Rudolph is joined by Andy Samberg as Harris' husband Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. The pair got cozy at home, poured a glass of wine and Jim Gaffigan, who returned as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and “SNL” cast member Bowen Young as Ohio Sen. Various subjects.
At one point, both VP candidates dodged questions, with Harris-like Rudolph laughing nervously and Walz-like Gaffigan saying, “Okay, okay. He's out there, he's doing his thing, whatever…”
When Young as Vance cast member Heidi Gardner – played by CBS anchor and debate moderator Norah O'Donnell – responded to what sounded like a prepared response, it impressed Gaffigan as Walz, who said, “This guy's good, he Got an answer for everything.” Yang appeared as Vance touched, praising the praise.
Playing up what amounted to a civil VP debate between the two real-life candidates, the two impersonators later agreed on other issues and finally said in unison, “This is an area where we have a lot of common ground.”
Berlin's “Take My Breath Away” followed with both candidates holding hands and a hilarious moment of connection across the split screen.
Watching at home, Harris-like Rudolph spits out his wine and asks in horror, “Why are they friends? Why are they shaking?!”
Then “SNL” alum Dana Carvey reappeared as President Joe Biden to crash their viewing party last week, and got her ice cream for herself and Rudolph as Harris when he told her, “You're going to be a great president.”
Nate Bargatze hosted this week's episode, after hosting for the first time nearly a year ago. Coldplay — who just dropped a new album, “Moon Music” — was the musical guest.
“SNL” airs at 11:30 pm EDT/8:30 pm PDT on NBC. Next week's episode will be hosted by Ariana Grande, with Stevie Nicks playing the music.
