Khalil Rountree Jr. suffered several gruesome cuts at UFC 307, taken to hospital after fight
Khalil Rountree Jr. won't soon forget his epic battle against Alex Pereira at UFC 307, because he'll have the scars to show for it.
Despite a valiant effort, the light heavyweight title challenger came away with a devastating fourth-round knockout loss shortly after his night ended as Perera's championship reign continued. After the fight, Rountree was taken to a local Salt Lake City hospital for precautionary reasons, including stitches to the horrific cut he suffered during the fight.
UFC CEO Dana White posted a behind-the-scenes photo of Rountree showing all the cuts and bruises from the fight against Pereira.
Although the result didn't go his way, Rountree showed a lot of heart as he gave Pereira everything he could handle early in the fight. With time running out, Pereira took control with accurate striking and a jab that did a lot of damage to Rountree's face.
As the fourth round progressed, Rountree had a concussion and was bleeding so much from the wound that it covered his entire face and chest.
Still, Rountree kept coming until Perera finally blasted him with a pair of body shots and a final uppercut that ended his night. He didn't win, but Rountree had nothing but praise for White's performance.
“He had no fear from the first round,” White said. “Khalil Rountree got in there and started going as the bell rang. No fear, no jitters, no nerves. Maybe he had some jitters and nerves, if he did he didn't show it.
“He went up against one of the worst dudes ever and just started mixing it up with him. It was great.”
It remains to be seen if all the damage done was merely superficial or if Rountree suffered any kind of injury from the fight. He will be examined by doctors in Utah before being allowed to return home to Las Vegas.
