NYC beats Italy again for world's best pizza in this ranking
NYC pizza still reigns supreme – no matter how you slice it.
A Manhattan culinary staple has reclaimed the title of having the world's best pie, usurping two southern Italian icons.
Una Pizza Napoletana, 175 Orchard St. — which tied for the title in 2022 and was named the best pizza in the U.S. for a third straight year last June — was again ranked No. 1 worldwide by 50 Top Pizzas this week.
Last year, Naples' Diego Vitagliano and Caserta's I Masanelli were first, with Una Pizza Napoletana second. This year, the two Italian companies tied again, this time in second place, behind the Lower East Side champion.
“In a country always used to putting everything on pizza, Anthony's offers only the purest tradition in toppings with ingredients of extraordinary quality,” reads the award site, owner Anthony Mangieri is known for marinara, margherita and cossaca styles and a rotating pie.
“It's inspiring to be recognized for 30 years of my career, especially in Naples where pizza originated,” said the Jersey Shore native and Yankee fan — who, in 2022, moved LES from New Jersey to San Francisco. CNN Travel.
He maintains that a good pizza starts with the dough. At Una Pizza Napoletana, there's a strong effort to keep the main ingredient hydrated — and only in good hands.
“After 25 years without me, no one makes the dough in the restaurant,” Mangeri previously said.
“Every pizza that people eat, I still make the dough myself in the morning.”
And, while Mangeri is grateful for the praise, he still has a higher purpose behind the kitchen counter.
“The recognition is appreciated, but ultimately, that's not why I started and why we continue to make every ball we serve at Ken Una all these years later,” he said.
“It encourages us to go into the restaurant every day and give more love and focus and not take anything for granted.”
Other parlors in the top 10 include Tokyo's Pizza Bar in third place at 38; The fourth is limited to Milan; And Napoli on the road in London finished fifth.
San Francisco's Tony's Pizza Napoletana came in sixth, and Italy's San Bonifacio's i Tigli came in seventh. Rounding out the top 10 were Sartoria Panatieri of Barcelona, Spain; 50 Black of Naples; And seu pizza illuminati in rome.
Locally, Ribalta near Union Square was No. 19, Hell's Kitchen's Don Antonio was 30th, and Brooklyn's L'Industry — awarded the best slice in the U.S. by the organization last June — took the 80th slot.
