A Bank of America outage showed customers empty account balances
First, it was Spotify, then Verizon, then PlayStation, and now it's the Bank of America outage this week. Some customers reported problems accessing their bank accounts on Wednesday, showing balances of $0 or “—-” instead of what should be there.
“Some mobile and online banking clients experienced an issue accessing their account and balance information earlier today,” Bank of America media relations executive Matt Card wrote in an email. The Verge. “This is a technology problem fully resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Reports surged just before 1PM ET on Downdetector, with people posting on X and across Reddit that their account balances were showing nothing (some noted that their owed amounts appeared to be showing correctly).
We verified this afternoon that the bank's app is showing customers a notice that says “accounts are temporarily unavailable” and “some accounts and/or balances are temporarily unavailable,” as previously reported by CNN. Some people have reported that their accounts are working or occasionally accessing their information, and it's unclear how many people are affected. In July, Bank of America said 58 million clients use its “digital capabilities to help manage their financial lives” and that they connected a record 23.4 billion times last year.
No word on what might be causing the problem, but let us know if things are working for you now
Update, October 3rd: Added updated Bank of America statement.
