A Vegas radio station banned Green Day after Billie Joe Armstrong called the city a 's—hole'
Some Las Vegas radio station decided that Billie Joe Armstrong was an American idiot.
D green day The frontman drew the ire of rock stations KOMP 92.3 and x 107.5, calling Las Vegas “the worst hole in America.” According to People, Armstrong made his rather heated comments during a September 20 show with Green Day at San Francisco's Oracle Park.
“We don't accept anything from people like John f—ing Fisher who sold Oakland to Las f—ing Vegas,” he said on stage. “I hate Las Vegas. It's the worst hole in America.”
Armstrong is an Oakland native, and his comments referred to John Fisher, the current owner of the Oakland A's baseball team. Fisher has owned the A's since 2005, but back in April, he announced the MLB team's planned move to the Las Vegas Strip to play in a yet-to-be-built stadium that would replace the yet-to-be-demolished former site. Tropicana Hotel.
The move sparked a lot of anger among A's fans, especially because the team will temporarily move to a minor league stadium in Sacramento, Calf., for at least the next three to four seasons. Additionally, there are still no final renderings of the potential Vegas ballpark and a financing plan remains elusive. They finished their final season in Oakland after playing there for nearly 60 years.
In voicing his dislike for Fisher and Las Vegas, Armstrong only joined the sentiments of other A's fans, who broke into AA “F— John Fisher” chants during the final game in Oakland on September 26.
But Vegas residents and radio stations did not take kindly to Armstrong's disparaging comments about their city. KOMP 92.3 announced plans to pull all Green Day music from their station on Instagram. “KOMP 92.3 has pulled any and all Green Day from our playlist,” they wrote. “It's not us, Billy…it's you. #vegas4ever.”
Another station to enforce a ban, X 107.5, shared a more detailed statement about its own ban on its website, with midday host Carlotta also making the announcement on air. “Well, Sin City heard [Armstrong] Loud and clear—and X107.5 isn't having it,” they wrote. “In response to Armstrong's inflammatory comments, the station is banning all Green Day music effective immediately… Armstrong has crossed a line with Las Vegas locals. We're totally breaking up with Green Day. Bye bye, Billy!”
Green Day's last official tour stop in Las Vegas was back in 2004, so it seems the feeling is largely mutual.
Representatives for Armstrong did not immediately return calls Entertainment Weeklyand Armstrong did not comment on his social media ban. He did, however, pay tribute to his favorite baseball team.
“I'm playing in the sand with my Oakland A's hat on,” Armstrong wrote. “Definitely going to be around 6 years old.. Athletics leaving Oakland is devastating. I think for all the fans and people who lose their jobs because of greed.. 3 sports teams have left Oakland in the last 5 years leaving a cultural hole East Bay Hearts and Sports I I believe that Oakland will bounce back from this.”
Green Day's last album was 2023 savior, In support of which they are currently touring.
