Dana Carvey's Joe Biden, Andy Samberg's Doug Emhoff, Jim Gaffigan's Tim Walz Join Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris to Cold Open 'SNL' 50th Season Premiere
(Updated with SNL and Trump tweets, video) “Well, well, well, look who fell out of that coconut tree,” Maya Rudolph said in tonight's season 50 premiere cold open. Saturday Night Live. “I see you're trying to leave, but the door's locked,” added James Austin Johnson later, for another year as Donald Trump.
With fellow alum Andy Samberg joining Rudolph's Emmy winner Kamala Harris as current Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Jim Gaffigan as VP nominee Gov. Tim Walz, it was all POTUS politics. SNL Cold open tonight. Plus some TLC moves from the current late night Veep, and SNLIts current MVP Bowen Young cites GOP VOP nominee Sen. JD Vance as a Radiohead.
Then, in a true blast from the past, Dana Curve arrived as President Joe Biden. “A lot of people forget that I'm the president, including me,” quipped Carvey's Biden, and the cold-open deal was sealed.
Or as Rudolph/Harris' self-described “fun aunt” put it: “My campaign is like that Sabrina Carpenter song 'Expresso,' the lyrics are vague, but the vibe is slapstick.”
Slightly below the October 11, 1975 first season premiere, tonight's Half Century SNL The debut has seen the political world change since the season 49 finale on May 18 since Gerald Ford was in the White House.
In the last three months, we've had a presidential debate debacle, an assassination attempt on a former president, a president drop out of the race, a vice president jump into the breach, two party conventions, two very different VP nominees, another POTUS September 10 Veep TKOing Trump. Controversy, another former POTUS assassination attempt, and an abandoned second debate. All of which leaves American with only one choice to call with just over 36 days to go.
Oh, and of course, New York Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on corruption charges this week.
How is this not the perfect breeding ground for a Lorne Michaels-led late night? Well, even with Rudolph Harris and three new cast members you don't know how easy it is SNL Defeat will surely take away from victory.

Departing as a SNL A cast member in 2007, Rudolph was last on the show last season when he hosted the May 11, Season 49 Penultimate Show stint, the third time the Loot star has hosted a show he's been part of at one time. Tonight 1990s cast member Carvey has played two POTUS in his long career, joining Biden with his iconic George HW Bush from more than 25 years ago.
Also, see you tonight Hacks Star (and recent Emmy winner, again) Jean Smart is making her long-overdue SNL hosting debut. Also new-ish on the Studio 8H scene, Jelly Roll (who starred in 76m Primetime Emmys earlier this month) returns as the musical guest for the second time.
