Lady Gaga chose not to address rumors that circulated early in her career that she was a man.

In a 2011 interview with Anderson Cooper, Joker: Folie à Deux The star was asked: “There was a rumor that you had male enhancement, that you were a hermaphrodite… A lot of artists have made some kind of statement saying 'that's not true at all', but you made fun of it.”

The “Born This Way” singer responded: “Maybe I do. That would be so terrible? Why am I going to waste my time and put out a press release about whether or not I have a gender? My fans don't care and neither do I.”

Now, in an appearance on Netflix What's next? future with Bill Gates, Gaga explained why she chose not to dispel the rumours.

“When I was in my early 20s there was a rumor that I was a man,” Lady Gaga told Gates. “I went all over the world. I've traveled on tour and to promote my record and almost every interview I've sat in – there's been this imagery on the internet that's been doctored – they're like, 'Rumor has it that you're a man. What do you have to say about this?'

Gaga, an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, said she doesn't consider herself a “victim” of the rumors, and she doesn't want to bring any “shame” to a child accused of the same.

“The reason why I didn't answer the question is because I didn't feel like a victim of that lie and I thought: What would happen to a child who is being accused to think that a public figure like me would feel ashamed? ?” she said

“I've been in situations where correcting a rumor was not in the best interest of another human being.”

Gaga explained that she is used to using “misinformation” and decided to try and use it to inspire thought and make a point.

“In that case, I tried to be thought-provoking and disruptive in a different way. I tried to use misinformation to create another breaking point.

“I've been used to having lies printed about me since I was 20 years old. I am an actor. I think it's kind of funny.”

Rumors about Gaga began after her performance at Glastonbury in 2009 when a photo went viral showing a rash in her underwear. Gaga says the image is doctored.

In 2010, in an interview with QGaga addressed the rumors and talked about leaning into them.

“We all know that the biggest talking point of the year was that I have ads, so why don't they give me what they want? I want to wear ad*** tied to my vagina.

“I also carry myself masculine on stage and sing in a low register. This is nowhere, right? I want to comment that in a beautiful, artistic way. I want to show you how. And I'd like to call this piece 'Lady Gaga Dies Hard'

He went on to explain what the rumors mean, especially about a female performer being open about her sexuality.

“When a guy says, 'Oh I'm all these chicks this week,' there's a high-five and a laugh. But when a woman does it, and it's publicized, or she's open about her sexuality, or she's free or liberated, it's, 'Oh, she must have advertising***. There are threats.”
