The Big Ten is investigating the Spartan-Wolverine fight

Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller contacted the Big Ten regarding a fight between Spartans players and Michigan Wolverines players after their game Saturday night.

After the final knee of Michigan's 24-17 victory, Michigan State defensive lineman Anthony Jones and Michigan tight end Colston Loveland collided, bringing both teams to the middle of the field as the clock ran out. Video shows Michigan running back Calel Mullings and other Wolverines engaging Michigan State personnel who were on the turf.

“I haven't looked at every angle and all of them thoroughly,” Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith said Monday. “It was a lot of bodies out there. … Yeah, we had a staff member who was on the field and a player who was in the fight, and that's what we're hoping for. [the Big Ten] Searching.”

Michigan coach Sharon Moore called the postgame brawl “unacceptable” on Monday. He said any potential discipline would be handled internally, adding, “We don't represent the University of Michigan, Block M or winged helmets like this. So we'll take care of it. It will never happen again.”

When asked specifically if he saw Mullings kicked or pushed by Michigan State, Moore said, “No. We'll take care of that.”

The incident comes two years after a Michigan Stadium tunnel fight between Michigan State and Michigan players resulted in criminal charges against seven MSU players, including one for felony assault. The Big Ten fined Michigan State $100,000 and issued an eight-game suspension on top of MSU's discipline of a Spartan player.

Smith wasn't coaching MSU in 2022 but said of his first road experience in the Michigan State-Michigan rivalry, “There's a real dislike. You can feel that from the start of the pregame, from the crowd to the venue and then the shared tunnel, so it's a unique rivalry. “

The Big Ten did not immediately respond to ESPN's request for comment on the incident.
