Colin Farrell completes Dublin Marathon while pushing friend in wheelchair, raises more than $700,000 for charity
Colin Farrell kicked the pavement through the city's streets to complete the Dublin Marathon – for the sake of his friendship with Emma Fogarty, Ireland's longest-lived survivor of a rare genetic skin disorder.
Pharrell, 48, was one of 20,000 runners to compete, but ran as part of the “Team Emma” squad, with the actor pushing his wheelchair for the last four kilometers of the race. Fogarty lived with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) representing one decade per kilometer.
“Fantastic, fantastic,” Farrell described the run to RTE News.
Fogarty was diagnosed with EB at birth. Better known as “butterfly skin,” the condition affects about one in 50,000 people, according to Cincinnati Children's.

The genetic mutation prevents the skin from forming properly and makes the skin extremely fragile, leading to scarring and infection.

“The Penguin” star and Fogarty have been friends for more than 15 years after meeting at a charity event, and as part of his 40th birthday celebration, Pharrell agreed to run the marathon and push Fogarty in his wheelchair during the race's final stages. .

“When you turn a corner, there are hundreds or thousands of people. The support there was incredible because it pushed you a little bit, and you actually, all the guards were saying, you go a little faster than you should.”
Farrell insisted that the race was due solely to Fogarty's strength.
“It all started with how you find a way to live with EB and not be a victim of EB,” he said. “Anyone who struggles and feels pain as a result, but not as a victim of it.
“Even though you suffer with it, you have a full life with more pain than any human being should experience.”

“I'm looking forward to meeting Colin here in the last 4km. He's going fast and doing really well,” he said.

“I'm very excited and very emotional. As many of you know, the reason I'm doing this is because I hit the big 4-0 this year, and I wanted to mark it in a huge way. But, it's you – the public – that makes it more than ever. Made bigger and more special.”
She added: “Thank you everyone for your amazing support and donations – in every way. We're hoping to reach €1 million. Please visit Debra.ie to donate.”
