Kevin Kline's secret to a successful Hollywood marriage? There is simply no Hollywood marriage.
The 77-year-old actor and star of Apple TV+'s “Disclaimer,” a series starring Oscar winners Alfonso Cuaron and Cate Blanchett, has been married to former actor Phoebe Cates, 61, for more than 35 years.
In a notoriously fickle industry that often dwells on appearances, maintaining a happy marriage—and some semblance of privacy—can be nearly impossible.
“If your marriage lasts more than six months, you're already in the Guinness Book of World Records, if you're married in Hollywood,” Cline joked to Business Insider on the red carpet for the “Disclaimer” premiere. Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Cline said she doesn't classify her relationship with the Cates as a “Hollywood marriage”—both literally, in the sense that they never lived in Hollywood (they spent most of their marriage on Manhattan's Upper East Side, where they raised their family), and Figuratively, in the sense that they're both pretty low-key, non-celebrity types despite being well-known actors.
“So you won't see any Botox. These are my lips, what's left of them,” Kline joked, pointing to her face.
Cline said she credits Cates herself for their happy marriage. “He has his head on his shoulders, unlike me. I usually have my head on his shoulders,” he said. “She's a great wife, a great mother, great person and she keeps me honest.”
“Except for the interview,” Kline added.
Cline met Cates during an audition for the 1983 film “The Big Chill,” making the jump from stage to screen with her film debut in “Sophie's Choice.” The two began dating in 1985 and married in 1989 — the same year Cline won an Oscar for “A Fish Called Wanda.”
Cates, for his part, became famous for his roles in such popular 1980s comedies as “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Gremlins.” He retired from acting in the 1990s (save an appearance in “The Anniversary Party,” a 2001 film written and directed by his best friend and former “Fast Times” costar Jennifer Jason Leigh) and now plays Blue Run Tree, an Upper East Side boutique she opened in 2005.
Cates and Cline have two children: their son Wayne was born in 1991 and their daughter Greta was born in 1994.
