Lamar Jackson: Has “great chance” to break Derrick Henry's single-season rushing record
Ravens running back Derrick Henry averaged 124.7 yards per game, putting him on pace for 2,120 yards. That would break Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105 yards set in 1984 for the Rams.
Lamar Jackson, the favorite for MVP, said he believes in Henry.
“it has” Jackson said Wednesday, via ESPN's Jamison Hensley. “I think he has a great chance to achieve that. I think he can do it. I believe he can do it.”
Henry has 873 rushing yards, the most through the first seven games by Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray's 913 in 2014. Murray finished with 1,845.
Henry has a career best of 2,027 in 2020, the fifth of his eight seasons with the Titans. No player has had two career 2,000-yard seasons.
“I really try not to think about it too much,” Henry said of Dickerson's record. “Just focus on doing my job and getting better and better every week. I don't really try to go into the statistics of things. I focus on the team's goals.”
The Cowboys are among the teams that didn't try to sign Henry in the offseason, a recurring question for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones with his team ranked last in rushing. In the offseason, Henry trained in Dallas and showed interest to the Cowboys.
Henry, turning 30 in January, could have scared other teams away.
Jones is correct: Henry probably was not That kind of impact on the Cowboys and perhaps not many other teams. He is at the right place at the right time.
“I went to the team I was supposed to go to and the team I wanted to go to,” Henry said. “I don't care what people say. I do what works for Derrick Henry and I'm a Baltimore Raven. I want to do everything I can to help win every week.”
