NBA Opening Night Scores, Live Updates: Celtics Hang 18th Banner, Surpass Knicks; Brony and LeBron together could be perfect for the Lakers

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have won nearly half of the NBA championships (35 of 78) since the league's inception, and the two major franchises took center stage Tuesday night on the NBA's opening night.

Boston has no championship hangover.

The Celtics hung their 18th banner and tried on their new rings in a pregame ceremony Tuesday night. They then went on to defeat the New York Knicks, opening the new NBA season with a 132–109 victory in June, setting a 3-point record in the process.

Jayson Tatum opened the game with a 3-pointer 10 seconds into the game. Boston torched the Knicks with 29-of-61 attempts from 3-point distance, setting a new NBA record for 3s made in a single game, a sign of things to come. The Milwaukee Bucks previously set the record with 29 3-pointers in a 144-97 romp over the Miami Heat in 2020.

Tatum, who spent most of his summer in Paris as a little-used Olympian on the bench, led the way and once again showed his chops as the centerpiece of a championship team. He finished the game with 37 points, 10 assists and four rebounds while shooting 14 of 18 from the field and 8 of 11 from 3.

The Lakers may have the most anticipated debut for a second-round pick in NBA history as Bronie James suits up for his first regular-season game, and takes the floor with his legendary father as LA hosts Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. LeBron James has spoken frequently throughout the year about wanting to play with his son, and the two shared the floor in the preseason. A father-son duo has never played together in the NBA, but Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. are the first to do so in Major League Baseball and will be in attendance tonight.

The offense often looks boring with mixed cities. He found himself out of position and in the way of the action on multiple occasions, not providing the space his shooting ability should have.

The Celtics scored 166 points per 100 possessions in the first three quarters, finishing with an NBA record for successful 3-pointers. The Knicks were out-rebounded, though that may have been because the Celtics rarely missed.
