Joni Mitchell released a brief but pointed attack on Donald Trump during his first Los Angeles show in 28 years.

The legendary singer-songwriter, 80, performed at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 19 and 20 where he was joined by a rotating cast of backing band members — known as Johnny Jam — that included Brandi Carlyle, Annie Lennox, Marcus Mumford, Allison Russell, Fleet Foxes' Robin Recknold and Rita Wilson.

Together, the group performed a number of songs in the 27-track setlist that Mitchell hadn't played in years, including “Big Yellow Taxi”, “California”, “A Case of You”, “Both Sides, Now” and a cover of Elton John. “I'm still standing”.

Mitchell previously covered the Elton John/Bernie Taupin standard when the songwriting duo was honored with the prestigious Library of Congress Gershwin Award.

An audience member apparently vented a tirade against Trump after performing “Dog Eat Dog” on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Billboard reports that Mitchell responded: “'F*** Donald Trump', I love that song.” He later added: “If I could vote… I'm a Canadian. I'm one of those bad immigrants.”

Carlyle, addressing the 17,000-strong audience, said that “serving Johnny's ambition tonight is probably one of the proudest moments of our lives”. LA Times.

Mitchell returned to live performance in 2015 after suffering a brain aneurysm, which left him temporarily unable to speak or walk.

After years out of the public eye, he shocked the world in 2022 when he made an unannounced return to the stage at the Newport Folk Festival, followed by an official headline gig at Washington's Gorge Amphitheater last June.

During his first Hollywood Bowl show, Carlyle revealed that Joni Jams, initially held in Mitchell's own living room “five or six years ago,” helped heal the veteran artist.

Friends and fellow musicians first came to meet Mitchell and sang his own songs to him – he later began harmonizing and singing from his sofa.

Mitchell said he was “honored” to have Carlyle as a friend, crediting him with bringing him out of his “retirement”.

Trump has come under fire from several high-profile artists as he continues his campaign for the US presidency.

The Republican candidate was called out by Canadian folk artist Rufus Wainwright last week after he played a cover of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah” during a chaotic town hall event.

Wainwright, whose version of “Hallelujah” was released in 2001 as part of the animated film's soundtrack. shrekcalled the song an “anthem dedicated to the recognition of peace, love and truth. I have been honored over the years to be associated with this ideal of tolerance.”

“To witness Trump and his supporters speaking to this music last night was the height of blasphemy,” he said.

Elsewhere over the weekend, the daughter of late golfing legend Arnold Palmer responded to Trump's lewd comments about her father.
