Tomorrow's Top 25 Today: Oregon replaces Texas at No. 1, Michigan falls from college football rankings
Nothing shakes up the college football rankings like losing to the No. 1 team in the country. And when a top-ranked team falls to another team higher in the rankings — like Texas fell to Georgia on Saturday night — it's going to make all kinds of difference in the new AP Top 25 poll.
One of them will be a new No. 1, and while Georgia will feel good about its position as one of the best teams in the country after winning on the road, AP voters aren't going to rocket the Bulldogs all the way. top spot Because there's one very good candidate ready to step up: Oregon.
In going No. 1, the Ducks will reach some historic bench marks that haven't been hit often even by the program's success in the 21st century. Oregon has been ranked No. 1 for just eight total weeks in AP poll history, and seven of those weeks were during the 2010 season in which the Ducks finished as the national runner-up to Auburn. The last time Oregon was ranked No. 1 was during the 2012 season, but that ranking was only held for one week.
Now, Dan Lanning and Oregon have taken over the top spot from Texas, but have already proven themselves against other top-five teams. The Ducks will hope to hold on to more than 2012 as they advance to play an Illinois team that was one of the week's big ranked winners.
Here's how we project the new AP Top 25 to see Sunday after 8 weeks.
1. Oregon (2): The Ducks didn't suffer any hangover effects from last week's epic win over Ohio State. Going on the road and shutting out an opponent after a short week of those types of results is impressive, and voters will take note when they move Oregon to No. 1.
2. Penn State (3): The Nittany Lions were off in Week 8 and return to Wisconsin next week.
3. Ohio State (4): The Buckeyes were off in Week 8 and will return to action next week at home against Nebraska.
4. Georgia (5): The Bulldogs don't have a ton of room to move up in the rankings, but their confidence in the SEC title race and other championship contentions is boosted after going to Austin and dominating Texas. The 30-15 score may not fully highlight how Kirby Smart's team tied the Longhorns in knots, looking more outclassed than they have all year.
5. Texas (Last Week – 1): Voters can make an easy decision when it comes to slotting Longhorns on their ballots; The loss to Georgia left Texas as one of the top losing teams in the country.
6. Miami (6): Cam Ward continues to put up eye-popping stats, this time going for 319 yards and four touchdowns as Miami holds off Louisville 52-45 in a shootout. It's the third straight game the Hurricanes have needed some late heroics to stay undefeated, but it's the seventh straight game in which Ward and the offense have answered the call to produce at a high level.
7. LSU (8): The Tigers have now won six in a row since that season-opening loss to USC, and after last week's overtime win over Arkansas against Ole Miss, they're starting to build some real strength in the rankings profile. . Highlights of the victory included another strong performance from LSU's defense, which forced turnovers and prevented the Razorbacks from building any kind of momentum in front of their home crowd.
8. Iowa State (9): It took some serious second-half heroics, but Iowa State improved to 7-0 with a thrilling 38-35 win over UCF. The 7-0 record marks the program's best start since before World War II, and now Cyclone fans can set their sights on the highest heights for what Iowa State can achieve this season.
9. Clemson (10): Leading by just seven at halftime, Clemson hit the gas to build some distance in the third quarter and held off a late charge from Virginia for a 48-31 victory. The Tigers have taken care of business with a 5-0 start in ACC play but now face some tough tests in the conference schedule at Louisville, Virginia Tech and Pitt over the next three weeks.
10. Tennessee (11): Not only does Tennessee light up some cigars after another win over rival Alabama, but the ranking profile gets a big boost from this win. Even if the move may not be immediately dramatic, Tennessee's ability to stay as the top team increases when Oklahoma and Florida previously had schedule-best wins.
11. BYU (13): The Cougars improved to 7-0 thanks to some late-game drama from Jack Retzlaff, and with another conference win on the resume, it's getting harder for voters to slot BYU behind multiple one-loss teams.
12. Indiana (16): Confidence continues to grow in Bloomington as Curt Cignetti's team not only passed its toughest test of the season thus far, but also hung up 56 points in a 49-point win at Nebraska. Star quarterback Curtis Rourke missed the second half with a finger injury, and the Hoosiers outscored the Cornhuskers 28-0 in the third and fourth quarters. It's possible Indiana will move ahead of BYU in the pecking order for undefeated teams, but we're projecting a landing just one spot behind the Cougars.
13. Notre Dame (12): There were just a few hiccups along the way, but for the most part, Notre Dame did a great job of handling its business on the road trip to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech. The 31-13 win now puts the Fighting Irish at 6-1 on the season, and despite a slew of injuries, the defense continues to play at a high level, holding the opposition to under 14 points for the fifth time this season.
14. Texas A&M (14): The Aggies defensive front traveled and answered the call with three sacks and 11 tackles for loss against Mississippi State in a 34-24 win. The offense wasn't as dominant as it was last time against Missouri, but the road win puts Texas A&M in the top 15 in the nation as one-loss teams.
15. Alabama (7): A win over Georgia last month does a lot for Alabama's ranking profile as the Crimson Tide drops to 5-2 with the loss at Tennessee. The eye test hasn't favored Alabama much over the past few weeks, and voters will struggle with how to rank a team that's nothing like the team they pushed to No. 1 just three weeks ago.
16. Boise State (15): The Broncos were off in Week 8 and will be back next week in a huge Mountain West showdown at UNLV.
17. Kansas State (17): It's hard to see a big shakeup in the rankings, but the Wildcats deserve plenty of credit for the way they handled business on two tough road trips, beating Colorado in Boulder and West Virginia next week in Morgantown. Kansas State is now 6-1 with its only loss coming to BYU, and given the schedule ahead, has plenty of opportunities to keep the win stacking up and slowly climb the rankings.
18. Illinois (22): The Fighting Illini have continued to be doubted and overlooked but have exceeded expectations at nearly every turn. At 6-1 overall with only one loss to Penn State, Illinois is starting to build a profile that would warrant consideration as one of the best one-loss teams in the country. The good news and bad news of the schedule ahead may put an end to those debates; Illinois now hits the road to take on Oregon next week in Eugene on CBS.
19. Ole Miss (18): The Rebels were off in Week 8 and will be back next week against Oklahoma
20. Pete (20): The Panthers were off in Week 8 but will return to action Thursday night against Syracuse.
21. SMU (21): The Mustangs currently work at Stanford
22. Army (23): Quarterback Bryson Dailey has already put together one of the best single-season performances in program history, leading the way with six total touchdowns in a 45-28 win over East Carolina to improve to 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in AAC play. In doing so, Dailey broke the single-season record for rushing touchdowns, now leads the previous record holder by two with 19 on the ground, and has plenty of games left to extend that record.
23. Navy (25): The Midshipmen continued to keep pace with their Commander-in-Chiefs Trophy rivals, improving to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in AAC play with a 51-17 drubbing of Charlotte.
24. Missouri (19): The Tigers deserve credit for coming back from a 17-6 deficit to win 21-17 behind a stellar effort by quarterback Brady Cook, who was sidelined with an ankle injury in the first half. But the team could see some ground on the undefeated squads behind them in the rankings due to quality performances in the game and continued momentum from impressive unbeaten starts from Army and Navy.
25. Vanderbilt (NR): Will Vanderbilt climb into the top 25 on the strength of a 24-14 win over Ball State? no But with wins over Alabama, Virginia Tech and Kentucky, there's some beef behind that 5-2 record that could garner a few more votes than last week when the Commodores were 26th in voting points and even appeared as high as No. 17 on more than half the ballots.
Drop out project: No. 24 Michigan
