Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga: Live round by round updates

MMA Fighting has Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga live round-by-round updates for the most anticipated boxing fight of the year at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Saturday night.

Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2) has won four straight fights and is competing for the second time this year. He defeated Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision last May.

Edgar Berlanga (22-0) knocked out Padraig McCrory in the sixth round last February in 2024.

Round 1: Canelo and Berlanga start out patient, fighters who don't want to make the first mistake. Punches from the range are being deflected off the gloves. Canelo looking to the body with a right. Canelo blocks a few punches and lands a combination. Berlanga lands a clean counter left. Canelo cuts off the ring and jabs Berlanga in the corner, the challenger backs away. Another jab from Berlanga. Canelo scores with a short left and a short clinch. Canelo lands a jab.

Round 2: Berlanga is probing the jab, Canelo isn't giving him much to work with. Canelo with a pair of hard body shots. Berlanga answers with straight punches, but Canelo corners him again. Round 3: Canelo is right back on offense. He is landing while chasing Berlanga, though Berlanga fires back. A left hook out of nowhere puts Berlanga on his back. He is quick to answer the count, but has he recovered? Canelo pressing advantage, he lands a big uppercut inside, then another right. Berlanga is hanging tight. Right hand to the body by Canelo. He is all over Berlanga. The challenger survived the round, but it was a big one for Canelo.

Round 4: Canelo lets that jab fly freely, he scores and follows up with a body shot. Berlanga sticks with his jab as he backs into the corner. Another jab-body combo from Canelo. Canelo with a hard right. He doesn't show much respect to Berlanga. Canelo with a right hand as Berlanga cools off against the ropes. Berlanga tries to sneak in a right, but can't get past Canelo's defense.

Round 5: Canelo takes center of the ring. He's content to let Berlanger's jabs smack harmlessly against his gloves. Canelo lands a jab and a left hook. Doc steps in as the fighters begin to throw body shots as they tie up and grapple. A Canelo right hand to the body. Berlanga is being singled out for being in the pocket with Canelo. Round 6: Canelo effortlessly walks down Berlanga without even throwing a punch. Good upper cut inside Berlanga. Still, Canelo comes out on top. Berlanga is angular, but active. Big laugh from him as he got up.

Round 8: Berlanga catches Canelo with a right hand. Canelo to the body again. Left hook from Canelo just misses taking Berlanga's face off. Berlanga with a 1-2, but he eats two hard lefts to the body for his trouble. Another left to the body of Canelo. Canelo, right hook for Berlanga with a pair of hard counter punches. Doc calls for a pause in the action to warn Berlanga about the headbutt, but Canelo connects with a solid punch before the referee separates them. Right uppercut by Canelo while resetting. A Canelo right hand gets through. He's landing body shots at will.

Round 9: Canelo uses that right hand to get around Berlanger's defense. Big right from Canelo. Clean connection for a 1-2 Canelo. Berlanga needs to wake up here. Rabbit punches by Berlanga and Doc interrupt the action, but are no concessions. Canelo stays loose as he walks down Berlanga. It seems like he's actually freaking out a bit. Berlanga rifles some jabs to straighten out Canelo, but it takes out Canelo's offense. Berlanga just can't stop getting cornered. Canelo lands a combination to end the round.
