One Direction members pay tribute to 'our brother' Liam Payne
In the wake of Liam Payne's death, the members of One Direction are mourning their “brother.” Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Harry Styles said they were “devastated” by his death in a joint message from the band's long-dormant Instagram account. “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” they wrote.
Payne went to Argentina to see Horan in concert on October 2, before falling from her third-floor balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel on October 16. She said on her Snapchat story that she and Horan “have a lot to talk about.” In their statement, the band members asked for privacy “to grieve and process the loss of our brother, whom we loved so much,” noting that they would speak individually when they were ready. “For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who love him as much as we do,” the band said. “We will miss him terribly.”
Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik also remembered Payne in personal posts. Penn's family “reflected her kind, funny and brave spirit,” while collaborators including Jade also paid tribute to the singer. Below, tributes to Liam Payne from the members of One Direction so far.
Zayn Malik said in an Oct. 17 Instagram post that he had “many more conversations” with Penn. “I can't thank you enough for supporting me through the hardest times of my life,” she wrote. “When I was away from home as a 17-year-old kid, you were always there with a positive attitude and a reassuring smile, letting me know you were my friend and loved.” Malik added that Payne was “outspoken, opinionated, and had no qualms about telling people when they were wrong. Even though we butted heads for it a few times, 😂 I always secretly respected you for it.”
“I lost a brother when you left us and I couldn't explain to you how I wanted to hug you one last time and say goodbye properly and tell you that I love and respect you so much”. On, he added “Beyond devastated.” She concluded “I hope that wherever you are now you are well and at peace 🙏🏽 and you know how much you are loved.”
Louis Tomlinson remembered Payne as “the kind brother I've wished for all my life” in an Instagram post on October 17. “Liam was someone I looked up to every day, such a positive, funny and kind soul,” she wrote. He particularly paid tribute to Penn's musical talent, calling him “the most important part of One Direction”. “Liam was an incredible songwriter with a great sense of melody,” Tomlinson wrote. “We often talked about getting back into the studio together and trying to recreate the writing chemistry we had in the band.”
Tomlinson ended his post with a direct message to Payne:
I feel lucky to have you in my life but I'm really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I'm so grateful that we've gotten closer since the band, talking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about the thousands of amazing memories we had together made me feel like I'll have you forever. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it could not be.
I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me, I will be the uncle he wants in his life and tell him stories about how amazing his dad was.
I wish I had the chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I love you.
Pineo, my son, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. sleep well x
