Cynthia Erivo Slams Edited 'Wicked' Movie Poster: 'Most Offensive Thing I've Ever Seen'
Cynthia Erivo reacts to an edited version of the “Wicked” movie poster that she calls “the most offensive thing I've ever seen.”
The Tony-winning actress shared an edited version of the poster on her Instagram story on Wednesday, a version of the upcoming movie's poster that more closely resembles the Broadway show's iconic poster.
Notably, the poster for the Broadway show obscures the face of Elphaba, the green-skinned character Erivo played in the film adaptation. The official poster for the upcoming John M. Chu-directed film shows Erivo looking directly into the camera, face obscured.
“This is the wildest, most aggressive thing I've ever seen, equal to the horrible AI fighting among us, humans questioning 'your ***** green,'” Erivo, 37, wrote alongside the edited photo. “None of this is funny. None of this is pretty. It degrades me. It degrades us.”
“The original poster is an illustration,” Erivo explained, referring to the poster for the Broadway show. “I am a real-life person who chose to look down the barrel of the camera at you, the viewer … because, without words, we communicate with our eyes.”
Erivo ended his post by defending the official movie poster, “Our poster is an homage, not an imitation, editing my face and hiding my eyes to erase me. And that's deeply hurtful.”
The Grammy-winning singer, in another Instagram Story post, shared the official poster of the movie and wrote, “Let me put this here to remind you and cleanse your palette 💚💚.”
Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda in the film opposite Erivo, also shared the movie's official poster on her Instagram story after Erivo's posts went live. Chu also posted the film's official poster which Erivo shared on her Instagram story, calling the actress “my superhero”.
“Wicked” hits theaters Nov. 22.
