WATCH: Iconic rock band Jane's Addiction sparks brawl at reunion concert
Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell attacked guitarist Dave Navarro during a freak onstage outburst that saw crew members drag him offstage and abruptly end the band's Boston concert Friday night.
Farrell seemed agitated and then told the crowd at the Leader Bank Pavilion to “f— you” before marching towards Navarro and throwing elbows at him.
Navarro seemed genuinely confused by what was happening, held out his hand, and calmly backed away as Farrell approached him.
Pharrell had to be restrained by members of the crew and bassist Eric Avery as he continued to throw punches.
After the lights dimmed and Pharrell was removed from the stage, Navarro, Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins returned to the stage and hugged each other, waving to the crowd and making peace signs.
Photographer Brian McKenzie, who was photographing the reunion gig, posted on X that Pharrell “had a huge bottle of wine with him all evening” and that concertgoers initially thought the feud was something between the bands.
Jane's Addiction is in the midst of a reunion tour, its first in 15 years, and was scheduled to play Sunday at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Neither band has commented on the incident as to whether the tour will continue.
However, Etty Lau Farrell, who has been married to Perry Farrell since 2002, took to Instagram to explain what happened.
“Perry's frustration grew as night after night, he felt the stage volume was too loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night,” he said. “But when the front-row audience started complaining to Perry that the band was playing too loud and they couldn't hear him, Perry lost it.”
ET Lau also claimed that once the lights went down, fellow band member Eric Avery “put Perry in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach” before he “walked to the front of the stage to apologize to the audience for ending the show early.”
Perry Farrell said The New York Post In September 2022 he missed performing with Navarro, who was battling a long-term bout with Covid.
“I wish I was around my favorite guitar player,” he said. “How do you find a guitar player to fill Dave Navarro's shoes?”
Jane's Addiction was formed in 1985 and was one of the first bands to achieve mainstream success from the alternative rock movement of the early 1990s, earning five Grammy nominations along the way.
