2024 NFL trade deadline: Eight big-name moves that should happen after Bills, Jets make WR splash
Six weeks of the 2024 NFL regular season are in the books, which means we're quickly approaching both the midpoint of the schedule and the new push-back trade deadline. All 32 teams have until Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. ET to make player swaps, and plenty of big names are rumored to be available. We've already seen a pair of big deals involving star wide receivers: the Jets acquired Davante Adams from the Raiders and Bills landing Amari Cooper from the Browns.
With that in mind, here are some trade suggestions of our own as the deadline approaches:
Possible Compensation: Conditional 2025 fifth round pick
Tua Tagovailoa is apparently on track to return to the field this season, despite some medical experts suggesting his injury history Immediate retirement should be considered. Since when has Miami managed to keep all its eggs in one basket? Lance remains a project, but he flashed his first-round athleticism under Mike McDaniel in San Francisco, and Dallas stuck him on the bench. He'd like to make for a low-risk, high-upside hire as added Tagovailoa insurance.
Possible Compensation: 2025 fifth round pick
A year after landing Cam Akers in-season, the Vikings could use more backfield depth with Aaron Jones coming off a hip injury. And Pierce saw his role change during the week in Houston, where the Texans got good results from both Akers, Joe Mixon and Dare Ogunbowal. His combination of size, speed and strength would make for a better complement to Jones, who is key to Kevin O'Connell's attack but also has an extensive injury history. Anything to keep Sam Darnold comfortable.
Note: The Raiders agreed to trade Adams to the Jets after publication.
It's been discussed so much that it would be a mild shock if it didn't come to fruition, reuniting Adams with his former Green Bay Packers teammate in Aaron Rodgers. That might not be the smartest bet on the Jets' end, considering how much they've already courted Rodgers, only to fire their coach early on an “all-in” campaign. And yet, if there's anyone who can help A-Rod return to Pro Bowl form given their extensive history and impeccable chemistry, it's probably Adams.
Possible Compensation: 2025 fifth round pick
He was supposed to be part of the 1-2 punch out that promoted Will Levis in Tennessee, but the Titans could get something for him before his inevitable 2025 free-agent exit as the Levis offense turns into a 1. At 32 on a bad knee in 4 starts, his value is not through the roof. For a contender like the Chiefs, however, Patrick Mahomes could prove vital to a potential stretch run amid injuries to Rushie Rice and Marquis Brown, relying heavily on rookie Xavier Worthy and an aging Travis Kelce.
Possible Compensation: 2025 fifth round pick
The Steelers have sniffed around blockbuster wideouts from Adams to Brandon Ayuk this year, but there are plenty of lower-level options who could be available. Thielen is one, coming off an injury-plagued 34 to rebuild the Panthers' stuck mud. He's got a much lower ceiling than a playmaker like Adams, but when healthy, he remains one of the NFL's most assured possession targets, making him a logical partner for the more explosive George Pickens in Pittsburgh's otherwise old-school offense.
Possible Compensation: Conditional 2025 third round pick
The Eagles received a conditional 2026 third for Hasson Reddick before the season, but their offseason edge addition, Bryce Huff, has yet to pop. And while general manager Howie Roseman has previously been burned by in-season bets on aging veterans, Miller has a history with new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, earning his last Pro Bowl nod under the coach with the Denver Broncos. Suspended through Week 8, he'll make a last-gasp effort to inject the Eagles' hit-or-miss pass rush with life.
Possible Compensation: 2025 fifth round pick
The Browns have every reason to be sellers, starting 1-5 but boasting several quality defensive assets, and Detroit has every reason to buy at edge rusher, with star youngster Aidan Hutchinson out indefinitely with a broken foot. Smith has already toured the NFC North, starting with the Packers and also suiting up for the Vikings, and while he's better suited as a rotational rusher at age 32, he would represent a clear upgrade for a thin unit in Motown, where the Lions have another run at the NFC title. interested
Possible Compensation: 2025 sixth round pick
While Jones is easily the Patriots' most successful cornerback, new coach Jerrod Mayo recently admitted that New England is just beginning a multi-year rebuild. At age 31, approaching 2025 free agency, Jones therefore makes a logical trade chip. While he's been more solid than spectacular over the years, his experience could be invaluable to Washington, which is a potential playoff contender thanks to rookie Jayden Daniels but has struggled mightily on the back end of Dan Quinn's defense.
Possible Compensation: 2025 fourth round pick
When at full speed, Baker is arguably one of the top safeties in the NFL. He briefly requested a trade out of Arizona before this season, though, demanding a big pay raise, and missed multiple games in both 2022 and 2023. With the Cardinals struggling on defense and a 2-4 start, his transfer prospects could ramp up. And Houston has struggled with injuries on the back end, with both Jeff Okudah and Jimmy Ward hurt. As a rental for the rest of the season, he could help the Texans make a deep run.
